PS5: Sony expects a smooth transition

Playfront

A console launch is usually associated with enormous costs for a manufacturer like Sony, which have to be paid for before a single cent flows back from it. When transitioning from PS4 to PS5, however, it is expected that this will run much more smoothly than in the past.

That's what Sony's chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki said at the investor conference on the current quarterly report. The PlayStation division continues to grow despite declining hardware and software numbers and will be able to absorb the production and upfront costs of the PS5. In the medium and long term, of course, growth comes to an end.

The earnings from services such as PlayStation Plus, PlayStation Now, and successful game launches this year are particularly helpful.

PS5 production already in preparation

It becomes interesting with regard to the PS5, whose production is currently being actively prepared. The aim is to be able to provide the right amount of units for the launch in the fall so that there is no fiasco like the PS4 did back then. It was difficult to get the console for around 6 months to introduce it.

However, no specific figures can be given at the moment, since this is a difficult balancing act anyway to bring factors such as production, marketing, distribution, etc. under one roof. Sony should have learned from the past and is therefore better prepared this time.
