PS5 & Xbox Series X – Corona Virus launch at risk?

It was only this week that Nintendo announced that the Switch was experiencing problems with subsequent deliveries, since the Corona virus is still rampant in China and many production channels are blocked. This could also affect the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X at Christmas 2020 if the pandemic continues.

In any case, the financial company Jefferies Group comes to this assessment in an internal memo. With most of the PS5 and Xbox Series X production in China, key factories may or may not be closed due to the outbreak. That would throw back the PS5 schedule and put the launch at risk.

“In the video game industry, a product generation change is currently being carried out or initiated in several years for the 2020 holiday season. If [the company] is idle for more than a month or so, the schedules will be delayed. The new consoles could also suffer from supply problems due to a long interruption before the planned launches in autumn 2020. ”

In the worst case, Sony and Microsoft would postpone the launch of their new consoles. A little more optimistic, there could be some gaps in supply and the required quantities could not be provided. Then you would probably have a scenario like back then with the PS4.

From a very optimistic point of view, the production of the PS5 has not yet started, which will probably happen in the middle of the year at the earliest. Until then, it remains to be seen how the situation around the corona virus will develop in China.
