Card games have always been a very popular activity when friends come together. We have long since passed Mau Mau and Uno and play really demanding games on the PS4. But where can you find the best card games on the console? And how did they make it onto the PlayStation? We took a close look around.
Magic duels
The basis of all strategically demanding card games is Magic the Gathering. It is a game that first appeared in 1993 and has enjoyed great popularity since then. Over the years, it has also become a digital success and is on the market in the form of magic duels. Unfortunately, despite planning to the contrary, it never landed on PlayStation 4. Only the predecessor Duels of the Planeswalkers made it onto the PS3 and was a very popular game there due to the long history of the game. While Magic Duels only appeared on Windows, Xbox, and iOS, both versions mostly had the great images that have graced all cards since 1993. In addition, all cards have interesting effects and it is a shame that the game never came on the PS4. Nevertheless, it is the standard of all modern strategy games.
Hidden card games in GTA and RDR 2
While Magic Duels is an obvious card game with sophisticated strategy elements, other developers took the opportunity to hide card games as part of a larger game. A good example of this is GTA 5. The classic from Rockstar recently brought the casino into play with an update. Since then, it has been possible to play poker in Los Santos while making money to buy expensive cars or houses. Gambling just seems to fit perfectly into the world around Trevor and has been positively received thanks to the real popularity of players. It is based on the card game of the same name from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and was released in December 2018 on the PlayStation Store. The game itself is a typical trading card game, which does not have the depth of Magic the Gathering, but has its own strengths. The goal is to have more points than the opponent and to beat them over two rounds. Anyone who now enthusiastically reaches for the PS4 controller must be disappointed. Gwent is scheduled to be discontinued on the console in June 2020. After that, there is almost a yawning emptiness on the digital card game market. Who is taking advantage of this gap?
The last hope is currently The Lord of the Rings: Adventure Card Game (our review) by Asmodee Digital, which also appeals to fans rather than the masses. The game has a new story from Middle-earth in its luggage and therefore offers no retelling of the famous film and book trilogy or from the hobbits.
