The Netflix effect in The Witcher 3: this is how sales have soared in 2019 for the series

The video game starring Geralt de Rivia was positively affected by the broadcast of this television series. Its sales grew 554%.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has experienced one of the best quarters in its history in the period from October to December 2019. The premiere of the first season of the official series of The Witcher with real actors on Netflix has translated, to large traits, in sales during December 554% higher than those of December 2018 in the United States.

United States and Netflix: interest in Geralt de Rivia grows

According to the latest report published by the NPD Group, a video game analyst consulting group in the United States, this performance exceeds even the peak that the billing title already experienced when the remarkable port of The Witcher 3 for Nintendo Switch was launched a couple of months before.

“The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was ported to Nintendo Switch in October 2019; just before the premiere of the series on Netflix took place, ”begins analyst Sartori Bernbeck, who signs the report. “All these factors combined caused the game to have a strong resurgence in sales during the last quarter of 2019. Video game sales in physical format last December were 554% higher than in December 2018. (And they are) even 63 % higher even if we exclude sales of the Nintendo Switch version. ”

Therefore, we can draw two conclusions from this report, which corresponds to physical sales only from the North American market. The first is that the port of Nintendo Switch made by Saber Interactive have allowed the video game, based on Andrzej Sapkowski's novels, to improve their sales compared to what they had been reporting in recent times. The other is that the Netflix series, despite not being an element strictly related to the video game industry, has had a much greater effect on a commercial level, with a superlative influence that shows that there are two types of cultural consumption able to complement each other.

In Steam there were also records. It was in the period of the last days of December and the first of January 2020 when Steam reflected peaks of 101,930 concurrent users with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for PC; the first time since the launch of the game in 2015 that this six-figure psychological barrier was overcome.

However, the first season of The Witcher is on its way to being the most successful of the platform. The second season, except surprise, will be broadcast in 2021.
