PS5: Production costs should be around $ 450, reference to launch price?

Playfront

While Sony is still covering up with a final price for the PS5, an interesting detail may have been leaked that suggests this. The business magazine Bloomberg reports on the production costs of the PS5 and relies on familiar people.

According to this, the production per PS5 unit costs around $ 450, whereas previously it was assumed to be $ 415. The price increase can be explained by the current scarcity and demand for the components, but Sony would also like to wait here, as it says.

According to Bloomberg, Sony would have made a definitive commitment to most of the PS5 components, while components such as DRAM and NAND flash memories are a bit of a concern. There are probably large inquiries from several manufacturers, which accordingly leads to limited availability.

Sony apparently pays special attention to the cooling system, in which you invest a little more. Here the costs per component are probably unusually higher than usual, presumably to be well equipped with them later.

The ongoing outbreak of the Coronona Virus in China currently has no impact on the production of the PS5, which experience shows that mass production begins in the spring or mid-year. However, it has probably not yet been decided how many PS5 units you want to provide in the first year.

Speculation about launch price

Based on these numbers, Sony could have launched the PS5 at a launch price of $ 450, now it is believed that it will probably be at least $ 470. It is also crucial here how much Microsoft will charge for their Xbox Series X in order to then orientate themselves on it. So at the moment everything is still open.

Sony has not yet commented on the report.
