PS5: SSD storage is expandable

Playfront

As part of the extensive tech talk on PlayStation 5, developer Mark Cerny explained the role of a solid-state storage drive (SSD) for the next-gen hardware in addition to the specifications of the console: The technology enables lightning-fast loading times and gives game developers a lot of freedom. In addition to the built-in SSD storage, it should be possible to upgrade the storage space of the console with an external storage.

External NVMe Drive

This is gratifying in that the storage space of the internal SSD is limited to 825 GB. With external storage systems, users do not have to use Sony's in-house hardware. The PlayStation 5 can also be expanded with a standard memory from the free market, which benefits from all features of the console. However, the prerequisite is that the external SSD storage meets the requirements of the console, i.e. has a bandwidth of at least 5.5 GB / s.

The catch: corresponding hardware is likely to be comparatively expensive at the time of the console release. Plus, users should make sure that Sony’s external storage has been validated before buying to make sure it’s compatible with PlayStation 5 and working properly.
