Resident Evil 3 Remake savors success: 2 million copies sold in five days

Resident Evil 3 Remake: minimum PC requirements

Capcom's game debuts at high speed since its release last April; the number of digital units represents 50% of the total.

Capcom has released a statement reflecting initial sales of Resident Evil 3 Remake and updates the cumulative totals for its award-winning predecessor, Resident Evil 2 Remake. The new iteration of the saga, one of the most anticipated releases of this first semester of 2020, has sold 2 million units worldwide in just five days.

The report, which includes sales computed in both physical and digital formats on PS4, Xbox One and PC, has had 50% of that total in digital format, a precedent to be considered by the Osaka company, which, it acknowledges, is partly deliberate because of its commitment to "promote digital sales".

If we add to this that the coronavirus (COVID-19) has precipitated the closure of hundreds of stores around the world – in Spain, for example, the state of alarm decreed by the Government prevents the opening of merchants of products that are not First necessity—, thousands of players have chosen not to choose home delivery but to bet on the immediacy of PS Store, Steam or Xbox Store.

Resident Evil 3 Remake savors success: 2 million copies sold in five days

Resident Evil 2 Remake sold 3 million copies in its first week

To put the data in context, it should be noted that the original Resident Evil 3 released in 1999 managed to sell a total of 3.5 million units, a figure that can be exceeded if a notable distribution rate is maintained throughout 2020. Likewise, Resident Evil 2 Remake is another comparison-sensitive focus. In that case, the video game released in 2019 – on the same number of platforms – managed to sell 3 million copies in its first week.

To date, with data updated to this April, Capcom reports total sales of 6.5 million units for Resident Evil 2 Remake, one of the greatest successes for the company in the last decade. In December 2019, it accumulated 5.8 million units. For more details, the previous last main episode, Resident Evil 7, has so far sold 7 million units.

Capcom is already asking its players if they want more Resident Evil remakes. An official poll raises the question. The next in the list, if the logical order of chronological publication is maintained, would be either Code Veronica or Resident Evil 4.
