Pokémon GO: everything you can do if you play from home during the coronavirus

Pokémon GO: everything you can do if you play from home during the coronavirus

We review all the options enabled by Niantic to play without going out in the confinement period and everything that has not been provided.

Niantic decided, in mid-March, to apply measures to enable the game at home in Pokémon GO due to the severity of the coronavirus. Spain and Italy had been confined for a long time by the measures decreed by their respective Governments and, therefore, leaving home is not an option; but little by little, the game options have been increased without leaving our home. In this article, we are going to review everything we can do without leaving home, how to do it and how long we can use this exceptional condition.

Exceptional measures: Pokémon GO applies changes during COVID-19

What started with a precautionary measure through the cancellation of the March Community Day ended up leading to the first gambling measures from home. Pokémon GO, therefore, renounced in part its own natural essence: move, move, go to the place where the events are happening and take advantage of the geolocation options. But the health situation is equally exceptional and, consequently, it was necessary to make extraordinary decisions in one of the greatest phenomena in the history of mobile videogames.

Thus, the Raid Hours — sixty-minute periods where legendary and unique Pokémon appear in Poké stops to wage group raids — were canceled.

Online game with friends (PvP): first big step

With the arrival of the GO Fighting League in its first official season, Pokémon GO's online PvP mode closed an initial preseason stage where the servers were put to the test. It just so happened that this debut coincides with the first season of the GO Fights League, but Coach Fights (non-competitive online friendly matches) now allow “sending Coach Fights challenges to Good friends (1 day of friendship) and Great friendships (7 days of friendship) without leaving home. During this period, you can play with this type of friends without the requirement of having to walk 5 kilometers to get the GO Combat League pass; Coins will not be necessary either.

  • Until Friday, May 1, 2020, the distance and Pokécoins requirements to unlock combat series in the GO Combat League are eliminated. If we have traveled any distance to reach a series, this change will take effect from the next series.

  • Until Friday, May 1, 2020: In order to play Coach Matches with friends, the friendship level requirements have been lowered in order to send combat challenges to Trainers with whom we do not maintain a good friendship or a great friendship.

Improvements to the daily bonuses and lots of a Pokécurrency

Not being able to walk normally and thus limiting the usual visit to the Poképaradas – which is where the vast majority of objects are obtained -, Niantic has also begun to distribute daily bonuses such as triple Star Dust and PX for the first Pokémon captured. Likewise, the number of gifts that we can open daily has become 30 (before, 20); while the number of gifts that we can store increases to 20 (instead of 10).

On the other hand, in exchange for a Pokécurrency we can get different batches of objects that rotate periodically. At the time of writing this article we have the following: 30 Poké Ball, 20 Super Ball, 15 Frambu Berries and 5 Silver Pinia Berries.

Interaction distance with gyms doubled

Another temporarily activated measure involves facilitating participation in Pokémon Gyms from home: temporarily doubling the distance from which you can interact with them. The measure will be useful or not depending on whether we are close enough to a gym from home. For some players, this measure falls short because it continues to prevent a Gym from being accessed from home in those locations where there is a shortage of these locations. Not surprisingly, in the statement published this past March 31, it was indicated that they are working on new ways to participate in the incursions from home.

Raids without leaving home: promised, but still waiting

The statement still does not materialize in that expected measure, but it will come “soon”. According to John Hanke, CEO of Niantic: "It will soon be possible to team up with friends and join Raids together on Pokémon GO from the comfort of home," as well as possible remote events like the Pokémon GO Fest following the cancellation of events. like the one that was going to be held in Liverpool, England, this April.

What can you continue doing normally

Otherwise, Pokémon GO Trainers can continue to exchange gifts with friends as normal, now with greater storage and opening capacity, as we have seen. This is highly recommended to get items and increase that level of friendship in the face of unequaled Friendship (90 days), with the advantages that this entails when participating in raids. In turn, we can continue training our creatures, capturing those Pokémon that fall within the range of our house …

According to the information updated by the Government of Spain since the state of alarm was decreed (Article 14 of Royal Decree 463/2020, of March 14), residents in Spain should not leave home except to do fundamental tasks and basic necessities: going to work, going down to shop, acquiring medicine or walking the dog; at least until April 26.
