Overwatch broke into the market strongly in 2016, highlighting from the outset and becoming a true mass phenomenon. A fresh and addictive gameplay with some characters full of charisma made the Blizzard Hero Shooter one of the most popular titles on the market, but the passage of time caused a sense of stagnation before which the Irvine company responds with a sequel Greatest in every way.
Jeff Kaplan, Overwatch chief designer, and Aaron Keller, assistant game director, presented Overwatch 2 at BlizzCon 2019, thus confirming all previous rumorology around a possible sequel. Blizzard's Hero Shooter was conceived as a fully multiplayer title, highlighted in the competitive online and the great asset of the Californian company to once again become a reference in electronic sports with the millionaire Overwatch League.
Not having a story mode was criticized, a void that Blizzard somehow tried to cover by developing the game's universe with some PvE events. Overwatch, a large organization of heroes, separated and in search of the moment to regroup and fight together against any threat, will have that expected union in a second part with which Blizzard hopes to oxygenate and return to the foreground to this franchise.
How will Overwatch 2 affect the players of the original title? Only in the PvE content, which will be accessible only to Overwatch 2 buyers. The rest of the news (heroes, maps …) will be integrated into both games, thus not separating the community and hoping to boost it even more.
In short, Overwatch 2 more than a sequel seems more Overwatch, with a very continuous Blizzard and little breakthrough around the game. This sequel will try to solve some gaps in the first part, such as the absence of a story mode, but, can Blizzard recover the magic and sensations that the game conveyed in its beginnings and that has been losing over time?
History and heroic missions
Overwatch 2 is betting big on the PvE, with a main game campaign in which new and classic Overwatch heroes will gather to face the terrorist group Null Sector. The history missions will allow you to collect objects that can slightly modify the playing style of a hero: the presentation showed a life regenerator, a protective barrier and corrosive grenades.
On the other hand, we will also have heroic missions, a way apart from history with enormous replayability. In it, players will have at their disposal a leveling mode in which we will have talents and personalization of skills that gives Overwatch an experience of progression similar to that of some RPGs.
New PvP mode: Advance
Overwatch will receive in this sequel a new game mode called Advance. The objective is direct and simple, with both teams fighting for control of a robot along the map; the team that manages to advance more with the robot in enemy territory, will win.
Advance is a kind of Escort variant that will allow you to try new compositions and thus improve the online experience. Content that, like the rest of PvP content, will also be available to all Overwatch owners who do not acquire the sequel.
New graphics
Overwatch 2 receives an improved graphic section, with the original revitalized heroes and much more visually highlighted maps. An improvement that could end up integrating in the base game and not only in the sequel, both forming the same client. In addition, the HUD of Overwatch 2 is much cleaner and less intrusive, thus facilitating the tracking of games, an important fact for a game that is currently the great bet of Blizzard in esports.
New heroes and maps
The Overwatch universe continues to expand, and a new character has already been announced: Sojourn, the first Canadian heroine. We do not know much about the new character, but by its appearance everything indicates that it will be offensive and with great mobility. There is the possibility that among the new heroes that appear at the launch is also Echo, the prominent robot that also made an appearance in the presentation kinematics of Overwatch 2.
Gothenburg, Monte Carlo, Toronto and Rio de Janeiro are the new maps presented so far, but some more are yet to come as Jeff Kaplan said.
The release date of Overwatch 2 is unknown, and the development team has asked for patience in this regard, ensuring that they are working to get the best product possible. We will be attentive to this bet in the form of a sequel that intends to put a title that seemed to have the potential to be one of the greats of the industry in the front line of fire.
