The Witcher on Netflix: differences with Game of Thrones and the original work

The showrunner of the expected series starring Henry Cavill explains the differences between the television adaptation and the literary work of Andrzej Sapkowski.

The expected television adaptation of The Witcher by Netflix opens on December 20 on the popular streaming platform and many are fans who want to know more details of one of the most anticipated series of the year. So much so that Lauren S. Hissrich, the showrunner of this adaptation, has pointed out the main differences with Andrzej Sapkowski's original literary work in the Variety medium through a recent interview, as well as with one of the greatest television phenomena of the recent years as is Game of Thrones.

Changes compared to the original novels

Thus, according to Lauren S. Hissrich, one of the biggest differences between television adaptation and novels is the premature introduction of two key characters such as Yennefer and Ciri.

“For me the theme of the books, while reading them, was really about this broken family in the center of it, formed by Geralt de Rivia, Ciri and Yennefer. They are united by destiny; They are all orphans in this world, a little lonely. None of them feel that anyone else has to survive. I wanted that family unit to be at the center of the story and one of the big changes I made regarding the narrative of the books was to introduce Ciri and Yennefer a little earlier and present them as fully developed characters, ”says the showrunner.

On the other hand, and after the constant comparisons with one of the great series of recent years such as Game of Thrones and parallels as adaptations of literary works, the showrunner points out several differences between the two: “In terms of history we delve deeper into the mystical There is magic, there are monsters … I think that television has not had for a long time the budget to create authentic monsters. It is an intelligent mix between prostheses and CGI. This is something that really reversed in the movies. But Geralt is a monster hunter and you can't have the series without monsters, ”continues Lauren S. Hissrich.

Finally, Lauren S. Hissrich also affects another aspect such as magic: “One of the things on which we built the series is 'what is the cost of magic?' If you are going to do magic, you will also lose something. That forces our characters to places where they have to use their brains much more than relying on magic tools. ” The showrunner concludes her interview remembering that The Witcher is a series for adults and will include sex and explicit nudity, although always in response to the story and its characters, not as a claim.
