Marvel's Iron Man VR, impressions from the public demo

We get into the red suit to embody the character of Tony Stark in the public demo of Marvel's Iron Man VR, the new Camouflaj for PS VR.

Who has ever dreamed of playing their favorite hero? Some fulfilled their dream dreams early in PSVR's commercial life, while others have had to wait for this moment. Part of Marvel’s Iron Man VR is already with us. The demo just released on PlayStation Store has allowed us to put on the red suit for the first time.

And it is that a couple of missions have been enough to get to know the great work of Camouflaj. Not only perfectly translates the feeling of being Iron Man, but to introduce us to a high-voltage action movie.

The power in your hands

The demo is pretty complete in terms of allowing us to experiment with its mechanics. During the visit after the start, we will be given access to the prologue and the initial chapter. From the first moment the studio plays with the interface to make you feel inside the suit. It may sound clichéd and even repetitive, but moving Stark's emotions inside his creation is the title's great achievement.

Before we begin we must make the requirements clear. Marvel’s Iron Man VR requires a pair of PlayStation Moves to function, which is logical considering the nature of the character. Therefore, if you do not have them you will not be able to play. Well, since training we must think the same as Tony. The position of the hands is vital; you have control of your body according to the position of your palms.

If we hold down the triggers of both hands and hold them firmly back, we will fly in a straight line. To rotate, we either move the viewfinder in a coordinated way with the arms or press the turn button, which will take us approximately 45º to the side where we have pressed. If you want to have a complete experience, we recommend that you free up as much space as possible between you and the camera. You are going to move a lot.

The transition between flight and combat is natural. If we encounter problems along the way, we can use the other palm to shoot at threats, while keeping the other arm in movement position. The key is to observe the environment and choose when to propel yourself, climb vertically, etc. If the action requires it, it is possible to strike a loaded punch.

The control is extremely refined. As it is. At first it is common not to know the inertia of the propellers when leaving them without activating. For those cases of loss a button has been added that keeps us levitating in a fixed position. From there we can resume the flight where we want.

Chapter 1

The chapter we are given access to is yet another day in the office for Tony Stark. Due to a luck of events, his personal airplane loses the control. To save the situation, we will have to make the necessary arrangements to resume the situation and save the crew. Again, the sensations are indescribable. You're there, flying like Iron Man would. Putting out fires with the palm of your hand and repositioning the engine parts.

Along the way we will encounter enemy combat units. These giant drones release bursts of green laser that we will have to avoid. Health is shown at the bottom of the hud, a bar divided into three segments along with an overall percentage.

Combat is an adrenaline rush. We used the plane as a flying cover against the onslaught of the rival. As we said in previous paragraphs, here the tips during the tutorial are put into practice. We must shoot and hit at the same time as we fly. The play of hands is crucial to avoid losing speed with respect to the giant on wings.

The scene, just under half an hour long, concludes with a free fall chase. The wreckage of the plane is left on the road, the trail of which we must destroy or avoid to avoid losing health. Once completed, we are returned to the main menu. From there you are free to replay the content you have gone through, or go to the two training circuits: speed and combat.

The images that accompany this piece do not do as much justice regarding what is seen inside the viewfinder. Graphically, it is below what was seen in other titles on the platform, such as Blood & Truth, but it maintains the type correctly. And, above all, fluidly. There are no framerate drops at any time. All information in the viewfinder is perfectly legible.

Conclusions

It has been a success to launch this demonstration to the public. The test allows the player to go through all the main features of Marvel’s Iron Man VR. And it does it with success, in addition to quality. We really feel like we are in a movie from the Marvel universe, this time in the title role. The control, refined, perfectly translates what Tony Stark would do.

For its part, Marvel’s Iron Man VR will arrive on PS4 on July 3.
