How Marvel’s Iron Man VR was made: studio challenges

The virtual reality game based on the popular Marvel character will go on sale on July 3 on PlayStation 4 (PS VR).

After Marvel’s Spider-Man, PlayStation 4 will receive a new title starring one of the Avengers. Marvel’s Iron Man VR will work in virtual reality and offer a different approach thanks to PS VR. In an entry published on the official PlayStation blog, producer Aaron Whiting has narrated in first person what the experience of developing this title has been like. It all started with a prototype, but the idea became a complete video game.

“I already worked on Camouflaj’s first project, République, before trying my luck at a larger local video game studio,” Whiting begins. “During my years away from Camouflaj, I heard my former teammates comment that the team was working on something very exciting and ambitious for RV.” So the product tested the prototype and was delighted with the result. “A tingling ran through my body within seconds of putting on the VR device. I looked at my body, saw the iconic red and gold armor, and thought, ‘Milk, I’m Iron Man’! ” Studio founder Ryan Payton offered to return to produce the title. “The rest is already history,” he says.

The importance of feeling Iron Man

On the way back, the challenge of designing a good prototype had already been completed, so they focused on creating the complete game. “We decided that the team would create the world not only around Iron Man, but also around his famous civilian identity, Tony Stark.” One of the problems Ryan wanted to solve is that the players felt like Iron Man, but were also able to see it. “Because of the first-person nature of virtual reality, we knew that gamers wanted to play Tony Stark, but we were concerned about the times when users would want to see Tony as Tony.” They explored various options, including whether the character was a companion to Tony. Luckily, our friends at Marvel pushed back on the idea, and with good reason: fans want to be Iron Man, not be by his side. ”

The solution occurred to the main screenwriter, Brendan Murphy, who borrowed an idea that had already been developed in the most current comics: having an AI based on Tony’s personality. “He is smart, resourceful and helps you improve armor. Suddenly, we had the best of both worlds: Players could not only see Tony, they could also be him! Also, can you think of a superhero who can enjoy his own company more than Tony Stark? ”He writes.

Family locations and the finishing touch

Among the actions that we will be able to carry out is the possibility of exploring Tony’s garage, talking to characters such as Nick Fury, Pepper Potts or Friday and visiting iconic locations such as the Malibu mansion, a SHIELD heliport, the Roxxon corporation or various locations of Stark Industries .

When the time came, they realized something was missing, so they added the interactive superhero activities. “In record time, we incorporated some superhero actions into the mission, which allowed players to do superhero things, such as putting out engine fire, repairing a broken wing, and deploying the plane’s landing gear.” Although he acknowledges that these moments were tough, he is satisfied with the end result.

Marvel’s Iron Man VR will go on sale on July 3 after its delay due to the coronavirus.
