Only 2% of Steam users play with 4K resolution

The latest data offered by Steam suggest that we are still far from adopting 4K resolution as a standard when it comes to playing on PC.

As usual every month, Valve has published the results of his latest survey of Steam users, whom he usually asks about the platform and its equipment and game forms. This month the results have been especially striking to show that only 2% of respondents play in 4K. The ultra HD resolution, one of the aspects that are always mentioned to sell monitors, talk about the graphics of a game and as the main feature of PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X, does not seem to have been adopted yet by the vast majority of users of PC Unlike.

This is the use of today's resolution standards by Steam users (the remaining percentage is divided between intermediate resolutions):

  • 1024 x 768: 0.47%
  • 1280 x 1024: 1.64%
  • 1920 x 1080: 64.58%
  • 2560 x 1440: 4.95%
  • 3840 x 2160: 1.74%

Why not play more in 4K?

Among the reasons that explain these numbers is the fact that, obviously, playing 4K requires a graphic card at the height if we want to maintain a decent framerate and a level of detail worthy of that resolution. Or put another way, it is the survey itself that solves this issue by offering data on the most popular graphics cards among Steam users.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 is the most popular of all, covering 14.44% of users, followed by 1050 Ti (9.66%), 1060 (5.39%) and 1070 (4.35%). To find the most used AMD brand we have to go to the RX 580, with a cake percentage of only 1.54%. But further away are the higher-end cards, with the RTX 2080 covering 0.88% of users and the RTX 2080 Ti 0.54%. Of course, it seems that it still needs to adopt 4K resolution as a standard when it comes to playing on PC.
