A few minutes ago, Sony unveiled the new DualSense controller for the PS5, which takes a radically different path than before. For Sony, the controller this time not only represents a simple further development, but a real leap in generation.

In addition to previously announced features such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, a new create feature was also suggested, which builds on the previous share function. There is also a powerful facelift in the design and the Tempest audio engine has also been thought of.

“The DualSense represents a radical departure from our previous controllers and shows how strong we feel to make the leap forward with the PS5,” said Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment. “The new controller, along with the PS5’s many innovative features, will be transformative for games and continue our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of the game now and in the future.”

Long battery life is taken into account

Many of the functions of the previous PlayStation controllers have been retained and supplemented by innovative features, which were made in consultation with the developers. This resulted, among other things, in the haptic feedback and the 3D audio that was integrated into the controller, while always taking the battery performance into account.

“This posed an exciting challenge for us to develop a new controller that builds on the current generation while taking into account the new functions that we have added. For example, with the adaptive triggers, we had to think about how the components would fit into the hardware without giving it a bulky feeling. Our design team worked closely with our hardware engineers to place the triggers and actuators. The designers could then draw the lines of how the exterior of the controller would look and feel, with the challenge of making the controller feel smaller than it really looks. In the end we changed the angle of the hand trigger and also made some subtle updates to the handle. We also carefully considered how to maintain long battery life for the rechargeable DualSense battery and reduce the weight of the controller as much as possible as new features are added. ”

More information about the DualSense controller, the create feature, the design of the console itself and much more about the PS5 will follow in the coming months.
