This is what Marvel’s Spider-Man (PS4) looks like at 60 FPS on PC with a rendering technique

Digital Foundry explains in a new video what the Insomniac Games title would look like with twice the number of images per second compared to the original.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is the most successful PlayStation 4 exclusive video game of the current generation. However, the technical limitations of Sony’s hardware limited Peter Parker’s adventure in New York at the hands of Insomniac Games to remain anchored at 30 FPS. In the absence of knowing if the standalone sequel Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will have 60 FPS when it comes out in late 2020 on PS5, Digital Foundry have published a new video with sequences of the original with 60 frames per second.

A special rendering technique for PC

In order to imagine what the original Marvel’s Spider-Man would look like at 60 FPS, the British media has spent 48 hours rendering the clips that we see on screen through a special technique with their computer; as explained at the beginning of the video. It enters through eyes, never better said, that the fluidity of those sequences (the video can be configured to see it at 60 images per second) is superlative compared to the 2018 video game: during the swinging with cobwebs, action scenes or merely when moving the Right stick for the camera quickly in the city. The difference is very noticeable.

Now, how did they do it? According to Richard Leadbetter, one of the Adobe After Effect applications called Pixel Motion Frame Blending has allowed the recording to overlap the default frame rate of 30 frames per image, an increase of exactly x2. Obviously, to do this you need a computer of several thousand euros. To highlight, in its components we find a Titan RTX GPU accompanied by a brain of the latest range, an Intel i9 10900k. Even so, despite the fact that some artifacts can be evidenced on screen, the result is surprising.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, next spider date

We know that PlayStation 5 will be able to offer ray tracing lighting through the hardware itself and that Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will take advantage of this technique to offer the current completely snowy Manhattan (the game takes place more than a year after the original story. ). Also, titles like DiRT 5 will feature a mode at 120 FPS. Will this be one of those that reach, at least, the desired 60 frames per second? Soon we will leave doubts. PS5 will hit stores in late 2020.
