Half-Life Alyx: data suggests that most Steam users cannot play it

More than half of the players with a Steam account do not have a graphics card ready for virtual reality, let alone helmets.

Half-Life returns, but not with the “3” that many expected, but as a new virtual reality experience. In Half-Life: Alyx, a recently announced title, Valve is committed to virtual reality. What is not so clear is that the bulk of Steam users will be able to enjoy it. At least, a Reddit (Annsly) user has reached that conclusion, who has crossed a series of official data to determine the percentages.

The user has taken as reference the data that Valve provides periodically on the graphics cards used by the users of the platform. In addition, he has confronted them with those of the official VR performance test of Valve. The conclusion reached is that only 37% have a graphics card ready for virtual reality, which means that more than half (63%) will not be able to enjoy Half-Life: Alyx input .

However, the data is even more daunting if we check the percentage of players that have a virtual reality system on Steam. Although Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are the leaders of the platform, together they do not even exceed 1% of Steam users, 0.38% and 0.34%, respectively.

Minimum requirements

Valve published on the official videogame page the minimum requirements we will need to operate Half-Life: Alyx. In the absence of knowing what the recommended ones will be, we find that we will need at least 16 GB of RAM to access the immersive worlds of the well-known Valve saga. As for the graphics card, a GTX 1060 is requested, although it will be necessary to see the performance that is achieved with it.

Half-Life: Alyx was born as a virtual reality game, although Portal was also considered as a possible candidate. It will go on sale in March 2020 exclusively for Steam, but users of the Valve Index can get the free game.
