IndyCar technical director Kevin “Rocket” Blanch announced his mid‑season retirement, ending a 36‑year tenure with the series.
Blanch’s departure marks the close of a longstanding chapter
Raj Nair, chair of the IndyCar Independent Officiating Board, described the loss as “mixed emotions,” while Scot Elkins, managing director of officiating, called it “a big loss.” Blanch, who had been contemplating retirement for some time, confirmed his decision shortly after the chaotic May schedule, which included the Indianapolis 500 and the Detroit Chevrolet Grand Prix. He noted that when IndyCar Officiating formed in December 2025, he was asked to stay through that demanding month, a request he honored.
Nair revealed that the organization tried to retain Blanch beyond May, hoping he might extend his service for another race or the entire season. Despite those hopes, Blanch’s commitment to the month’s schedule was fulfilled, and he stepped aside as planned.
Nick Allen assumes the technical director role
Following the announcement, Nick Allen—hired in January as technical inspection manager—was promoted to technical director of IndyCar Officiating. Nair praised both Blanch and race director Kyle Novak for onboarding Allen and other officiating staff, including Ray Evernham and FIA chair Ronan Morgan, since the independent group’s inception.
Allen’s immediate challenge will be managing the series’ transition to the next event at World Wide Technology Raceway, scheduled for a Sunday night (9 p.m. ET) race, followed by a testing session at Road America.
Series gears up for the next phase
With Detroit’s Grand Prix behind it, the championship moves forward without its long‑time technical chief. Nair emphasized Blanch’s “wealth of knowledge” and lasting impact on the sport, while also expressing confidence in Allen’s ability to sustain officiating standards throughout the remainder of the season.
