Resident Evil 2

With the remake of the original released in 2002, we have basically been dreaming for 17 years and for 2 generations that Capcom gave the most iconic Resident Evil of the saga the same ‘Deluxe’ treatment that got the first installment. And it is that the couple of Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield became one of those sequels that outshines the originals. And the remake of Resident Evil 2 has become one of the 'must-have' of the year, because even if you are not a fan of the saga, even if you do not like terror, zombies or survival horror, just because of the the brutality of living the experience you should keep an eye on. It is not trivial to be among the five deliveries of the best punctuated saga in history.

With one of the best audiovisual finishes of 2019 -the graphic treatment is pure infarction-, Resident Evil 2 knows very well to mix the nostalgia with the right doses of reinvention so that it is not a 'Remaster' ride, but a novelty and déjà vú constant at the same time. Reinterpret the best moments, reorder them so that we cannot get ahead of them, bring us back the best tension of those Survival Horror of two generations ago, and mix the exploration, puzzles and action with the mastery that Capcom had before. For many RE2 it is the GotY 2019, as in our writing, because there are plenty of qualities to be.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

After the praised work of Miyazaki with the Soulsborne, the Japanese designer launches with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, a new IP with Activision that returns the aroma of Tenchu. GOTY 2019 is an epic in feudal Japan through our protagonist, 'The Wolf', a shinobi with lethal skills and tools.

The close and offensive combat against a succession of bosses is as exciting as a challenger, only suitable for the bravest. Remember, there is no multiplayer, it's just you and your katana. Without a doubt, one of the essentials not only of this year, but of the generation.

Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order

This 2019 has been, once again, a year full of Star Wars. Whether with the Mandalorian series, with the movie: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker or with the game at hand: Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order, no fan of the saga can complain about lack of content. As for the title, it is one of the great adventures that leaves us this year. Respawn Entertainment brings us a play starring a charismatic Jedi called Cal Kestis and although the game does not revolutionize or reinvent anything in the adventure genre, everything he proposes does very well.

The most prominent part of the game is that all the pieces work: the balance between platform and exploration, backtracking and excellent level design, as well as a simple but solid combat and a growing difficulty and adaptable to each type of player. The plot is not its strong point and has some technical problems, but its development in various semi-open worlds and the fact that all the elements fit well, make Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order a game to take into account.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of a Lost Past S, final edition

The role-playing video game that, for meristation, was one of the most excellent manifestations of the JRPG genre of recent years, was transferred to Switch with a rarely seen mastery. Deep in its design, exciting to know its characters in detail, and tremendously ambitious when it comes to the lighting journey's approach, Yūji Horii's latest Dragon Quest arrives at Switch maintaining his visual charm (what the art of Akira Toriyama on the screen of the Nintendo hybrid!) And adding new missions. As if that were not enough, some of them make us return to the Dragon Quest of the past, those who marked our childhood directly influencing our adventurous eagerness, while if we want to remember the adventure with 2D graphics in the old way, we can do it. Essential.

Recently we have known the development of a new title of the saga based on the manga Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. What better way than catching up?

Elysium disk

It is no accident that Disco Elysium has emerged as the best independent game of the present 2019. Lovers of the traditional role have been represented in it. The freedom to travel the path you want is total, you can even sow a friendship with your home mailbox. In our Reviews we talked about that in order to achieve "excellence" you don't need bulky action sessions, but "you only need commitment and brilliant writers willing to leave your eyelashes writing a monumental work."

And therein lies the key to its greatness. Beyond the action and consequence, a great role-playing game must be based on an exquisite script; The quality of your texts is unquestionable. Now available on PC, it will arrive on console next year.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

The saga of tactical strategy returns with excellence by flag. Possibly one of the most ambitious video games of the genre, Fire Emblem: Three Houses puts us in the role of a mercenary who, by chance of fate, is seen in the position to teach the future soldiers at the Garreg Mach Monastery. From that moment, we will choose one of the three houses to teach our lessons, we will be immersed in different frames according to our mission, and we will attend the best tactical battles of the franchise.

Hundreds of hours in which to carry out all kinds of missions, immerse ourselves in more than a hundred conversations to meet the deep characters of this complete adventure, and attend a cluster of script twists that compete in epic with series like Game of Thrones or the next The Witcher. Wonderful.

Blasphemous

One of the most followed Spanish developments outside our borders, Blasphemous is one of the most solvent metroidvania this year. Strongly enthroned both with the traditions of southern Spain and with the Hidetaka Miyazaki ideology in terms of combat and exploration, it is one of those games in which getting lost in your mapping ends up becoming a more than absorbing experience.

The raw opera of The Game Kitchen is a title with a considerable duration, which has final bosses and very well designed areas in which we will dispatch bizarre versions of Goya's works. After a few months of its launch, the team has been improving some of the roughnesses indicated by the community. This, together with the DLC that seems to be on its way, makes Blasphemous a game with the potential to be considered one of the greats of a genre in which outstanding proposals have not stopped coming out lately. Now available on Xbox One, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Activision continued to earn revenue from its most popular and profitable franchise, but precisely that popularity was clearly not the same as in the past. Therefore, he decided that it would be the one that is surely his strongest team, Infinity Ward, the one that took a turn – not 180 degrees, but almost the proposal and create the most different delivery of the generation. To begin, add the long-awaited Campaign Mode that was so much missed in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, presenting the classic history of contemporary warfare that is so good at the studio and that is capable of removing consciences, and on the other , with a more classic multiplayer, away from futuristic environments with bizarre weapons, double jumps, etc … Modern Warfare returns to the roots, the game that changed online shooters forever, but it does not necessarily smell old, because Infinity Ward has recognized the needs of the current player.

To start, and seeing the current weakness of Battlefield, implements Terrestrial War, a sort of domain on maps considerably larger than what we are used to in the franchise, even with vehicles, but on the other hand, pull what they do best: Domain, Team Duel, Hot Spot … Fast and frantic games yes, but also more strategic than ever, without constant encounters with rivals and spamming every second. In addition, the traditional and obsolete Season Pass system with paid DLC is abandoned to address the most modern Battle Pass, where all the vital content for the game – maps, modes, etc … – is free. We recommend that you take a look at our guide to not miss the best tips.

Pokémon Sword and Shield

This time, our journey takes us to the idyllic Galar environment to set up a new Pokémon experience: the next era begins. The first three-dimensional video game for Switch of the saga not only offers an exceptional environment to address the Pokémon experience from the prism of the open world (we are talking about the wild area), but also provides a good accumulation of new species, such striking game dynamics like the spectacular Dinamax, and an adventure with JRPG flavor full of unforgettable moments. You may not have the best post-game in the saga.

It is also true that the game at hand does not reach the heights of excellence of greats like Zelda or Mario (and we are among those who think that it deserves to reach that magnitude). What we are sure of is that it is a video game that can excite both the followers of this successful franchise and those who are first approaching it.

A Plague Tale: Innocence

Focus Entertainment and Asobo Studio presented one of the surprises of the year. A Plague Tale: Innocence tells the story of two brothers who are immersed in an adventure like no other. We are in France, in the 14th century. Amicia and Hugo live peacefully in a well-off home, since their family is noble. However, the boy has a strange disease that keeps him isolated from the world. However, the fate of both will change with the attack of their enemies. They must escape and collaborate to get out of the experience alive. The game has moments of action and stealth, while allowing you to use the skills of each of the characters.

A title of those who make us shrink our hearts. It will definitely catch you.

Katana Zero

Katana Zero is a game that enters through the eyes. That its pixels are among the best distributed in the industry few can doubt it, with scenarios sumptuously full of details and animations perfected to satiety. It is also its playability an authentic delight, mixing the hotline action of Hotline Miami with its absolute intolerance for errors along with the mechanics of "slow motion" and a perspective more similar to traditional 2D platforms. The result is a game that from the beginning to the end demands finesse on the part of the player and that rewards those capable of perfecting the use of their mechanics with satisfactory combat sequences.

What we did not necessarily expect was the ability of Katana Zero to create his own identity through a completely overflowing story that deals with cyberpunk themes, the classic existential question of the world as simulation and other crazy science fiction themes. The result is a plot that never ceases to surprise us from beginning to end and defines Katana Zero as something a bit above what its excellent action and style can show in the first place. Available on PC and Nintendo Switch.

Judgment

Judgment is a title that was built on the basis of the Yakuza franchise, but still presents great news and marked differences with respect to it. With a story that presents a magnificent script and a lot of content, it also presents a very careful setting and interesting mechanics that fit very well on the existing playable base. The interpretations of the actors that appear are memorable and even make us believe that we are watching a movie, sometimes.

Another point in favor is that it comes to us fully translated into Spanish and for that reason Judgment is a perfect gateway for those whose theme or lack of location of Yakuza has prevented them from taking the step to get to know the Ryu ga Gotoku Studio's work. The studio lives one of its best moments, especially after being less than a month from launching in Japan the new stage of its star brand: Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
