During qualifying, the team’s best time was a full second slower than the final Cadillacs, exposing a chassis that, according to Alonso, ranks as the weakest on the grid.
Power unit and gearbox setbacks linger
Honda has admitted that the hybrid unit remains unsatisfactory, citing persistent vibrations that have now been partly ironed out, but still leave the internal combustion component below expectations.
Lance Stroll and Alonso have complained about the power unit’s driveability, while the gearbox’s feel on downshifts continues to frustrate both drivers, pointing to a holistic performance deficit.
Honda pledges long‑term partnership
Koji Watanabe, president of the Honda Racing Corporation, highlighted that the 2026 season began “very challenging” yet echoed the 2015 experience where perseverance led to a championship in future seasons.
Drawing parallels to Honda’s past alliance with Red Bull, where the Japanese manufacturer’s first collaboration at McLaren in 2015 was marred by an early downturn, Watanabe stressed that the firm will not switch partners but will instead deepen its collaboration with Aston Martin.
Strategic upgrades and trackside engagement
Adrian Newey’s significant upgrade package, slated for later this summer, will be the catalyst for improvement, while Honda will also receive two upgrades for the remainder of the year and two more for 2027.
Following a visit to Barcelona, Watanabe held a trackside team gathering at the hospitality unit, confident that open discussions will accelerate the resolution of technical issues and reinforce trust among engineers and drivers.
Future prospects and ongoing laboratory work
Team ambassador Pedro de la Rosa acknowledged that “there is no light at the end of the tunnel” currently, but he noted that the Nissan Industry, ADUO and forthcoming power‑unit updates provide a route to recover lost pace, only through sustained effort.
Despite the current setbacks, the duo’s unified stance—that results remain frustrating yet the work will payoff—sets the tone for the remainder of the season, as engineers tackle chassis, gearbox and power‑unit synergies in a race to close the performance gap.
