The FIA has declared a Heat Hazard for this weekend’s Austrian GP, pushing teams and drivers into a split‑second decision over cooling vests or ballast.
Heat Hazard Declared
Under Article B1.5.10 of the FIA F1 Regulations, the governing body confirmed that the heat index at the Red Bull Ring would surpass 31.0 °C during the race. The emergency protocol, issued after a forecast from the official weather service, activates extra cooling procedures for drivers.
Temperature Forecasts
Predictive models call for 32 °C during Friday’s FP3 and qualifying, with the race start at 3 p.m. local time seeing 33 °C. These figures exceed the 31 °C safety threshold set by the FIA, prompting both the Heat Hazard declaration and the provision of cooling solutions.
Driver Options
In line with the protocol, drivers will choose either a cooling vest or an additional 0.5‑kg ballast to be affixed to their cars. Cooling vests were originally slated for mandatory use, but driver protests over comfort and effectiveness kept the device optional.
