Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has ruled out any Max Verstappen arrival at the Silver Arrows for 2027 by committing to George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
Verstappen speculation dies after contract expiry
The Dutchman, whose Red Bull contract runs until 2028, faced exit clauses that may have permitted a switch, but after those dates lapsed he publicly reaffirmed his 2026 stay with the team.
Despite the potential, background chatter persisted until the Austrian Grand Prix, when Wolff’s remarks silenced speculation once again.
Wolff cited the remaining presence of both Russell and Antonelli as a stable foundation that fits Mercedes’ strategic outlook.
Double reinforcement for 2027: Russell and Antonelli
“We don’t want to change things,” the Mercedes CEO told Sky Sports, adding that the lineup “has been brought to the team” and that he is very happy with both drivers.
George Russell, governed by an agreement that once again placed his future at Mercedes in question, navigated the season to secure a 100 % pledge to stay.
Antonelli’s credentials also cemented his role; the 19‑year‑old has been thrust into the spotlight with the senior driver’s future formally confirmed.
Dominant 2026 debut notifies no changes
Antonelli surged to a leading position after winning five out of seven Grand Prix, building a 50‑point margin over Russell, who remains third in the standings.
This early season dominance reassured the team management that the current driver pairing is performing as intended.
Contrast that with the 28‑year‑old Verstappen, who has repeatedly outpaced his rookie teammate but is less relevant to Mercedes’ immediate plans.
Wolff recounts confidence in seasoned driver
After Russell topped final practice in Austria, Wolff told reporters “He’s coping well” and noted the driver’s adjustment after “the last one and a half days was difficult.”
He praised Russell’s ability to stay “in the confidence zone” and to trust both his own performance and the mechanics’ setup choices.
“He doesn’t need to prove to anyone that he has the speed we know he has and the ability,” the team’s boss added.
Antonelli’s five‑of‑seven run in focus
When reviewing the season’s early rounds, Wolff highlighted Antonelli’s fastest laps in FP1 and FP2 of the Austrian event as evidence that the teenager’s career is truly unfolding.
His youth combined with proven race results provides Mercedes with a fresh, long‑term prospect for the 2027 campaign.
With the Red Bull driver firmly anchored, the Silver Arrows appear to have settled on a stable, confident pairing that it will carry into the next F1 season.
