Mercedes software error hit George Russell harder than Kimi Räikkönen – F1 update

Mercedes: Software issue “affected George more than Kimi”

Mercedes pinpoints software bug behind Russell’s dip

Mercedes’ deputy technical director Simone Resta confirmed that a software bug in the team’s power‑unit ECU caused George Russell’s lack of top speed at Silverstone and Spa‑Francorchamps.

Impact across two Belgian tracks

While the issue was first noticed at Silverstone, it was far more pronounced at Spa, a circuit that demands a high power delta. Resta said the team “finally understood it and nailed it” ahead of the Budapest round, indicating a resolution had been reached.

Older power unit and software muddle

Both Russell and his teammate Kimi Antonelli carried the same ECU firmware, yet the bug affected Russell more severely. Resta explained that Antonelli was running a newer power unit, which naturally performed better, whereas Russell’s unit was comparatively older. “The software is the same for all the cars, but it was felt more by George,” he said.

Recovery after the Belgian GP crash

Russell retired on lap one of the Belgian Grand Prix after being caught up by rivals onto the Kemmel Straight, leading to a spin into the gravel trap by Lewis Hamilton. The incident dropped him 50 points behind Antonelli in the drivers’ standings.

Team’s response and outlook for the next sprint

Motorsport asked Resta how crucial it was that Mercedes listened to Russell’s concerns. He answered that the driver’s clear feedback helped the team identify the fix and that “thanks to George for having done that for us.” Resta added that the new regulations present ongoing learning opportunities, but the bug resolution in Budapest marked a significant step forward.
