Dan Houser’s stance on physical releases
During the event, the former Rockstar co‑founder and GTA series writer remarked, “I love physical media; if people want it, companies should provide it.” He added that his own venture, Absurd Ventures, works on new intellectual properties across several formats.
Houser, who left Rockstar in 2020 to launch Absurd Ventures in 2021, appeared alongside veteran Rockstar broadcaster Lazlow to discuss the firm’s podcast series and the latest issues of the American Caper comic book.
Diverging viewpoints on digital convenience
Lazlow answered questions about the lack of a disc, saying he appreciates the tactile experience of inserting a disc but also enjoys downloading games on the go, such as “quick games for a 12‑hour flight” on a Steam Deck.
Industry implications and fan speculation
Rockstar’s decision to exclude discs aligns with Sony’s 2028 announcement to cease PlayStation disc production, sparking backlash among gamers. Because the disc‑free packaging has already been declared for the console and PC releases, rumours of a special physical edition for the 2026 holiday season are regarded as unlikely until the PC version launches.
Sam Houser, still heading Rockstar Games, remains the gatekeeper for any future revisions. While Dan Houser expressed a preference for physical media, the company’s current strategy shows no immediate change toward a disc‑included release.
