Martin Brundle Commends F1’s Lateral Thinking as Malaysia GP Returns

Martin Brundle praises F1's "lateral thinking" over Malaysia return

Malaysia will reprise its role on the Formula 1 stage by hosting the postponed Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit from 2‑4 October, after conflict in the Middle East forced the original Sakhir event to be cancelled.

Brundle applauds the “lateral thinking” move

Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle, on air before the Hungarian Grand Prix, praised the decision, saying it demonstrates “lateral thinking” and acknowledges Bahrain’s long‑standing friendship with the sport since 2004.

It’s quite good lateral thinking because we can’t go to Bahrain anytime soon. he added, noting the Malaysian government’s readiness and the necessity to preserve a 20‑plus‑race calendar for commercial and sporting reasons.

Driver voices echo the optimism

Former W Series driver Jamie Chadwick, co‑presenter on the broadcast, called the venue a “cross between Hungary and China” and highlighted the appeal of racing on a track that has long been a “favourite” for many drivers.

She added that the mix of conditions at Sepang will make for an “interesting” challenge given the cars and deployment of 2024 season equipment.

Past, present, and future of Sepang

M‐edition’s last Formula 1 event took place in 2017, when declining ticket sales and high hosting fees prompted the organisers to withdraw. Max Verstappen won that race, with Lewis Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo sharing the podium.

Brundle warned that the teams will face a logistical squeeze, with six races in seven weekends across remote locations; he thanked the stakeholders for their flexibility and openness.
