Palworld’s 1.0 launch on July 10, 2026 produced only 14 Metacritic reviews for PC and two each for PS5 and Xbox, leaving the majority of critics unrepresented.
Why Palworld 1.0 Lagged Behind Critics
Developer Pocketpair left most media outlets without early review keys or codes, a decision highlighted by former publishing lead John “Bucky” Buckley in an X post on August 7.
“We didn’t distribute press keys in advance, unlike other titles that follow the conventional timeline,” Buckley explained, noting that the game’s secrecy was intentional to maintain a surprise element for the community.
In that same statement, Buckley said the focus for 1.0 had been “fans, not the industry.” He added that the game demanded a heavy time investment, which may have further discouraged rushed criticism.
While Palworld achieved more than 40 million players before the 1.0 release, the company’s strategy still let the formal review cycle lag.
Pocketpair’s Strategy and Future Releases
Looking ahead, the studio announced that its next project, Palfarm, will adopt a traditional critic‑first approach, sending out press keys a month beforehand.
Simultaneously, Pocketpair has partnered with Garena to launch Palworld Online, an officially licensed MMORPG slated for iOS and Android later in 2026.
These moves suggest a pivot toward balancing fan engagement with industry feedback, while maintaining the brand’s reputation for fostering a dedicated community.
