Otmar Szafnauer on Toto Wolff’s Role in Crafting Force India’s Iconic Pink F1 Era

Otmar Szafnauer reveals how Toto Wolff helped create Force India's famous pink F1 era

Otmar Szafnauer revealed that the season‑long pink livery on Formula 1 cars started when BWT, a water‑filtration specialist, approached Mercedes for a deal that was rejected.

Birth of a Pink Livery

Andre Weissenbacher, BWT’s CEO, chose the neon hue after a Frankfurt trade show, noting that competitors relied on blue. He wanted a brand that would not blur into the sea of sky‑blue.

Mercedes’ board declined, citing the team’s identity as the “silver arrows.” In response, Toto Wolff redirected BWT to Szafnauer, offering a forum for discussion and refusing a cut for the introduction.

Szafnauer agreed to speak with Weissenbacher, accepting the risk that the sponsor might back out. Within two weeks, the agreement was signed, and BWT paid the full amount, validating the driver’s gamble.

The Decision that Painted Melbourne

Pushed by the chance to make a mark, Szafnauer decided to paint the cars pink just before the Australian Grand Prix, hoping to secure the sponsor’s fulfilment and satisfy owner Vijay Mallya.

When the pink cars returned to Melbourne, they turned the grid into a splash of colour and confirmed BWT’s presence in Formula 1.

The partnership paved the way for subsequent Ferrari “pink arrows,” a legacy traceable back to a single sponsorship meeting that changed the aesthetic direction of the sport.
