Williams Baku Upgrade Pays Off with Weight Cut
Williams’ newly trimmed FW48, unveiled before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, promises the team’s drivers a tangible boost in lap speed due to the car’s compliance with the Formula 1 minimum weight law.
After a season struggle with an overweight chassis, the updated chassis offers “free lap time,” Mile‑high former IndyCar star James Hinchcliffe explained on the F1 Nation podcast.
The weight drop eliminates the need for further setup changes or driver skill adjustments, providing a straight‑away improvement in performance that “is quite literally a horsepower equivalent,” Hinchcliffe added.
He noted that the reduction would benefit everything from braking to traction, tyre wear, and overall track speed for those who integrate the new weight limit into their running.

Driver’s Perspective on the Impact
Hinchcliffe emphasised the relief the extra “free lap time” would give the crew, citing similar weight‑related deficits seen with other grid‑contenders, like Red Bull’s early‑season heaviness.
The session on “sack time” was described as a “free lap time” that “requires no setup changes” and ultimately translates to a raw increase in lap speed, ensuring that drivers do not need to acquire additional skill to benefit.
Team’s Long‑Term Outlook
Team principal James Vowles acknowledged that, despite the incremental gains, the season remains challenging. He warned that the winter mistakes will persist for the rest of the year and that only modest progress is expected before the next‑season car arrives.
Vowles emphasised that the current upgrades cannot yet guarantee a points finish; however, they are a step toward reaching at least the scoring zone, as he stated: “We’ll move forward on the grid, but it will still be a tough old slog.”
While the weight decrease is a welcome relief, the future for Williams hinges on compound gains—managing tyre degradation, traction, and braking—as the team works towards competitive stability.
