Kimi Antonelli, the Formula 1 points leader, has reportedly begun to feel the weight of his championship fight after finishing fifth in Baku, according to Sky Sports pundit Naomi Schiff.
Antonelli’s Alert Beyond the Track
Schiff highlighted the Italian driver’s on‑track demeanor in Azerbaijan, noting that his body language suggested a subtle self‑suspicion that could hamper performance.
“He looks stiff, as if he is constantly fearing a mistake,” she told the Up To Speed podcast, adding that the pressure can pull a driver “out of his head.”
Illustrating a pattern from the previous season, Schiff acknowledged that Antonelli had managed to break the mental block in the early races after successfully shifting his mindset to one of freedom.
Team Dynamics and Scoring Impact
Entering Baku with an 81‑point margin over teammate George Russell, Antonelli’s fifth‑place finish reduced his advantage to 66 points after Russell claimed pole and the race win.
Despite the drop, the Mercedes driver remains comfortably ahead of Russell, who now sits in second place in the standings.
The endurance of the lead is questioned as the psychological friction reported by Schiff could translate into on‑track slower laps or lapses under pressure.
Path Ahead in the Championship
Schiff encourages Antonelli to recapture the confidence that has carried him to victory in the past, stressing that the championship is “such a psychological game.”
With the countdown tightening, the Italian must manage both mental composure and lap‑by‑lap consistency if he is to sustain his advantage against a teammate eager to close the gap.
Only the next races will reveal whether Antonelli can silence the doubts raised in Baku and keep the points lead firmly in his sights.
