Lando Norris slams online abuse, explains his view on Franco Colapinto’s apology

Lando Norris rues online abuse, explains Franco Colapinto apology

Lando Norris issued a public apology to Franco Colapinto after threatening a race ban for the Argentine driver following the Azerbaijan Grand Prix pile‑up.

Following the incident, Norris posted a statement that the comments he made were “in the wrong” and he had “issued it to the wider audience.” He said he had already apologized to Colapinto in a brief phone conversation and that the driver had reciprocated by admitting fault for the crash.

Public Apology and Immediate Reaction

Norris explained that the apology was issued despite not needing to use social media, because “there was obviously a lot of that noise and stuff in the background.” He added that he accepted responsibility for some of his remarks and praised Colapinto as a “nice guy” who they often speak to on the track walk.

While he acknowledged that his post‑race comments sparked a flood of online abuse, including death threats, he described the backlash as an over‑reach beyond normal sporting passion. He urged the sport and social platforms to take stronger action against such toxic behaviour.

Reflections on Social Media and Future Commentary

Norris said he has scaled back his own social media usage but does not intend to silence his opinion. He noted that fans will never all favour him and that “that’s normal and that’s life.” He maintains a balanced view that speaking his mind is important, even when it may upset some supporters.

Driver Relations and the Race Ban Debate

The incident highlighted tensions between McLaren and Alpine representatives, with Norris calling for a race ban that Colapinto’s supporters saw as excessive. Both drivers have since accepted their parts in the Baku collision, with Colapinto apologising for the crash and Norris for the offensive comments.
