PlayStation has just pushed Quick Spectral Super Resolution onto every PS5, giving the console full‑scale AI upscaling for the first time.
Roll‑Out Hits the Base PS5 Today
The update launches immediately on the original PS5, enabling a new graphics mode that sits beside Fidelity and Performance. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei were chosen as the inaugural titles, while the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion for Ghost of Yōtei arrives on the same day.
Project Amethyst & AMD Drive the Technology
Quick Spectral Super Resolution is the product of Project Amethyst, PlayStation’s partnership with AMD. The system refines the neural network used in PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, and the code has been hand‑optimised to squeeze maximum performance from the PS5 hardware.
With the more efficient network and tailor‑made implementation, QSSR delivers greater pixel‑level clarity and temporal stability, boosting image detail without sacrificing frame rates.
Developers Praise the Sharper Picture
Insomniac’s Mike Fitzgerald said, “QSSR adds more pixel‑level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amid the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and elsewhere.” He added that the feature “brings a great taste of the PS5 Pro experience” to every PS5 player.
Sucker Punch’s Jasmine Patry highlighted that QSSR “excels at resolving the fine details in our characters and environments and does so with a level of temporal stability that hasn’t been possible on the PS5 console until now.” She concluded, “We’ve long wished that all PS5 players could experience the incredible image quality that PSSR brings to PS5 Pro, and QSSR is a positive step toward that goal!”
More Games Are on the Horizon
PlayStation confirmed that additional titles will receive the upscaling in due course, naming GTA 6 and God of War: Laufey as potential candidates. Whether those games will include QSSR at launch remains uncertain.
