Kimi Antonelli Prepares Aggressive Undercut Attack at F1 Malaysia GP

Kimi Antonelli eyes aggressive undercut attack in F1 Malaysia

Kimi Antonelli takes third on the Bahrain Formula 1 grid, a berth secured after Isack Hadjar received a five‑place penalty for the race.

Qualifying was a study in near‑success

Antonelli had the most potential of any driver in the session, topping a FT3 that looked promising. Yet straight‑line speed deficits and tyre management woes meant Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and Hadjar slipped up the ranking. The Italian finished a mere half‑second behind Verstappen, while George Russell landed eightth, which would translate to a seventh‑place finish after Hadjar’s penalty. “It’s a lot better than I expected,” Antonelli noted, blaming an error in track limits for the loss of pace.

Uncertain upgrades and a brutal circuit

Mercedes’ seven‑piece upgrade package, introduced at Sepang, still feels imprecise. “We have a lot to learn about it,” the Austrian admitted, highlighting the track’s razor‑sharp tarmac and blistering temperatures that push the tyres beyond operating windows after the first pair of corners. The lack of consistent feedback has left the Silver Arrows hesitant, as the drivers juggle performance gains with the harsh track conditions.

The race will hinge on strategy

Antonelli says the key to compensating for any deficits lies in the undercut. He plans to use pit stops to exploit fresh rubber on the highly abrasive circuit, hoping to outpace rivals by a full stop. “Strategy will be vital; we’ll attack whenever the undercut offers a clear advantage,” he said. The team is uncertain whether a two‑, three‑stop strategy will prevail, but the heat and tyre wear make every pit decision critical.

An undercut is achieved when a driver pits for new tyres, then overtakes the leading car after the leader has pitted and the fresh rubber provides a temporary speed advantage.

With 208 °C of asphalt ahead, Antonelli aims to strike the perfect balance between aggressive qualifying and calculated race strategy, hoping the upgraded package delivers enough gains to challenge the front‑row movers.
