A GDC survey reveals preferred platforms for developers

Video game developers think about their favorite consoles to create, as well as about the convenience of meeting all under one association.

The GDC 2020 – Games Developers Conference- will take place between March 16 and 20, with the ceremony of the GDC Awards 2020 being held on the 18th, specifically, but before, the organization has made the usual survey among developers about the state of the industry. Having participated around 4,000 developers, who have shared their opinions on the next generation and the current one, it is concluded that most prefer to create video games, in terms of consoles, for PlayStation 5, followed at a short distance from Nintendo Switch and with greater difference with respect to Xbox Series X, the next console of Microsoft.

The results of the survey

It should be noted, first, that 50% of the developers surveyed are mainly interested in creating for PC, this being the reference platform. Starting from that base, and speaking exclusively after consoles, 38% expressed interest in developing for PlayStation 5, for a remarkable 37% for Nintendo Switch. Meanwhile, 27% opt for a Microsoft platform of name to be revealed at the time of the survey, since it was held before the Game Awards ceremony last December, when the Xbox Series X nomenclature was finally revealed .

However, these figures are not directly related to the video games that are currently being developed, with very few developers working for the next generation, at least among those surveyed. Only 11% acknowledged being involved in a PlayStation 5 project, while that percentage decreases slightly in the case of Xbox Series X, with 9%. Even so, 23% of the creators maintained their expectations that the game they work on – whatever it may be – ends up appearing on the next Sony console, by 17% in the case of Xbox Series X.

Interestingly, another of the questions in this survey talked about the union between developers. 54% of them think they should unite in a coordinated way, while 21% voted an ambiguous "Maybe." On the other hand, 16% are against this coordination, with 9% being recognized with many doubts about the convenience of this union, which, incidentally, has already begun to be organized by two associations: Communication Workers of America and Game Workers Unite.
