The Witcher of Netflix: the author of the books recognizes that he did not get too involved with the series

Andrzej Sapkowski denies that fiction can be compared to video games, as they have different objectives and a different approach.

The Witcher of Netflix has been one of the successes of the platform, which already prepares a second season for 2021 and an anime movie. The author of the novels, Andrzej Sapkowski, worked during the production of the series. The question is, to what extent was he immersed in the development of fiction? According to the author himself, he did not get too involved. This is how he recognizes it in an interview with Gizmondo i9:

"Not much, at my request," he reveals. “I don't like working too hard or too long. By the way, I don't like to work at all. ” The writer admits that when he was contacted at first he was reluctant to participate. "A lot of people have contacted me, generally not very serious, so I practically lost hope and it was hard to persuade me when a new offer suddenly appeared." However, in this particular case, the people liked it, while the proposal seemed attractive from the business point of view. "I had every reason to react positively."

Your opinion on CD Projekt RED titles

When asked about video games, he argues that he cannot compare the series with the work of CD Projekt RED. The reason? "I've never played any." According to the creative, since he was little he did not enjoy games, "with the possible exception of bridge and poker." He prefers books as entertainment, although beyond that, his opinion is that both products cannot be compared. “They are too different in approach, accomplishment and objectives. You can't compare spaghetti carbonara with a bicycle, even when both have advantages and disadvantages. ”

Sapkowski stands as a defender of the "freedom of the artist and his artistic expression". He explains that he does not usually interfere and that he does not "impose" his views. “I do not insist or fight for anything. I advise when necessary and ask me. ” In addition, he is aware that changes are inevitable in an adaptation. “The process of transforming words into images cannot be done without some losses, but I prefer to keep the details for myself,” he says when asked about the change he liked best.

The series has increased sales

That The Witcher has reactivated the sale of books and video games is a proven phenomenon. What does the author think? “How do you want me to respond to this? I despair? That shed tears? What are you considering suicide? No sir. My feelings about it are quite obvious and not excessively complex. ” On the whys, the author responds with irony and humor:

“I am tempted to say that it has happened because of the author's exceptional talent, but I will not fall for that, I am too modest. I will answer with a Latin proverb: habent sua fata libelli, books have their own destiny ”.

The first season of The Witcher is available on Netflix since last December. The series starring Henry Cavill introduces the protagonist of the adventure, Geralt de Rivia, who will have to accept contracts to get rid of terrible monsters. Meanwhile, in the field of video games, CD Projekt RED has decided to launch Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales on Nintendo Switch by surprise. This is the Gwent spin-off, the card game set in the sorcerer's universe.
