Microsoft explains how it will improve compatibility with games from previous Xbox generations so that the experience is total.
Microsoft unveiled Monday the final technical specifications of Xbox Series X. The new console of the company, which maintains its commitment to reach stores in Christmas 2020 despite the coronavirus, will have a new controller and almighty hardware; but Phil Spencer's do not want to forget the importance of backwards compatibility, which will apply juicy improvements throughout the catalog.
Hardware backward compatibility on Xbox Series X: benefits
Taking for granted that there will be hundreds of backwards compatible games to launch on Xbox Series X, we now know that the benefits of this feature will include immediate startup (Quick Resume) and load times, more stable frames per second, higher resolution and quality of Enhanced images, such as HDR application. Finally, Smart Delivery: Buy once for your entire cast of Xbox consoles and the game adapts to the machine you use.
“The Xbox team is committed to the concept of compatibility and cross-game generation, which not only keeps your favorite games moving forward with you, but also allows you to keep your Xbox One accessories, saved games, and progress. In fact, your entire gaming legacy moves with you to the next generation, ”they comment in the official note.
A special algorithm to activate HDR mode
From Digital Foundry they extend the official information from Microsoft and explain that Xbox Series X will be able to activate HDR mode although the original games of previous generations did not have it thanks to a special algorithm; the same that was used with Gears 5 (2019, The Coalition) at the time with machine learning resources.
By increasing the maximum brightness of all the elements on the screen (image by image), 1000 nits can be reached in certain parts of each snapshot, which will ensure that "almost all" of the games manage to implement it.
Likewise, it should be said that the backward compatibility of Xbox Series X will be through hardware, not software, so it will come as close to what we can imagine through native emulation. This will gain not only in resolution and image quality, but also in framerate whenever possible. In the case of the British medium they have used Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, which comes to offer a native 4K image on Xbox Series X instead of the original 1080p.
