Star Citizen: Squadron 42 adds a new delay and its creator shows his face

The beta version of the expected Star Citizen story mode is delayed again, but this time without offering news and without giving a new release date.

More than a year ago, on August 31, 2019, Cloud Imperium Games announced that Squadron 42, Star Citizen’s campaign mode, was being delayed until the end of 2020. A news that was a serious blow for fans of the game, who wore waiting for it since it was presented in October 2018. More than twelve months later, two days before the end of 2020, here we are, orphans of space operas. It is time to assume a new delay that, although we anticipated, this time it has not been announced with due elegance. It is true that Chris Roberts, the head of Star Citizen, warned a couple of months ago that we were still far from entering the beta phase, but no one thought that on December 23, while we were tasting nougat while waiting for Santa Claus, the game’s roadmap page was going to be updated by removing all references to the beta version.

The disappointment on the part of the community has been palpable. We did not expect the beta as a Christmas gift, but we did trust to receive news about its status, a new release date or more information about its contents, to at least recover some excitement with details that we did not know. Instead we have had a very long statement from Roberts in which he takes stock of the year and ends up draining the bulk. “Squadron 42 will be ready when it is, and we will not launch it just to meet a date.” The designer justifies the absence of new gameplays, images or updates by saying that “being so far from its launch, right now a marketing campaign is not necessary.”

The communication continues as follows: “I have decided that it is best not to show any Squadron 42 gameplay, or discuss new release dates until we have enough confidence and time to finish it, and also to do it with the quality we have always wanted Until then, the current Star Citizen is the best possible sample of what we are going to offer on a technical and graphic level. You can download it and continue to enjoy updates every three months with improvements in content and graphics. My hope is that you are as hooked on Star Citizen Squadron 42 is here before you know it. “

What will Squadron 42 offer?

It will be time to continue dreaming for an indeterminate time with the Star Citizen story mode, for which more than one known Hollywood face has already been confirmed. Actors like Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker in Star Wars), Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully in The X-Files) or Henry Cavill (the last Superman and Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher series for Netflix) are some of those who will give life to the campaign characters. Expectations are through the roof since Cloud Imperium Games itself promised that Squadron 42 will be better than God of War, or that titles like The Last of Us Part 2 and Red Dead Redemption 2. Hopefully we can prove it some day.
