2K Games to continue publishing Borderlands despite Gearbox purchase

The studio responsible for all the main video games in the series has been acquired by Embracer Group, the owners of THQ Nordic.

The Borderlands saga stays at 2K Games. This has been confirmed by the company in a statement sent to IGN, also partially reproduced on social networks. The Gearbox Entertainment Company, those in charge of developing the different deliveries of this looter shooter, announced yesterday its acquisition by Embracer Group, the same company that owns THQ Nordic and Koch Media, among other companies dedicated to entertainment and video games. 2K Games has ensured that this operation will not modify its relationship with Gearbox and Borderlands.

“As the proud publishers of the Borderlands saga, we are happy for our partners at Gearbox and their exciting new chapter as an organization,” said a representative from 2K Games. “The merger does not change the relationship between 2K and Gearbox nor does it change our role as editors of the Borderlands ip or any other project we are currently working on with the studio. The Take-Two Interactive company looks forward to continuing its long-standing collaboration “with this incredible talented team” to continue offering more interactive experiences in the future.

No details on possible new projects with 2K

Despite references to possible new projects with Gearbox, neither 2K Games nor the studio have officially revealed anything. For now, the company led by Randy Pitchford will join the Embracer Group. In the press release in which they announced the agreement, it was confirmed that the CEO of Gearbox will continue in the same position. They intend to take advantage of the group’s synergies to continue launching “creative and valuable” video games.

Borderlands 3, available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC, is the most recent game in the series. Embracer Group has disbursed an initial amount of 360 million dollars to complete the operation, of which 175 million have been translated into newly issued shares of Embracer B. According to Pitchford, the strategy that will be established from now on will help to meet short, medium and long-term objectives.
