EA will transfer development of the Need for Speed series back to Criterion Games, while Ghost Games will devote itself to other projects. Criterion Games was most recently involved as a co-developer on the Need for Speed and other series.
Ghost Games new job is now to act as an engineering hub for the entire EA portfolio, as stated in a statement:
“The engineering expertise of Ghost Games, some of whom are architects of the Frostbite engine, is critical to a number of our ongoing projects, and they would remain at this location.”
Some of the developers of Ghost Games will switch back to Criterion Games or other EA studios, as it goes on to say.
The fact that Critierion Games is once again entrusted with Need for Speed has to do with the fact that the Guildford-based studio is one of the largest in England.
"With a strong history and passion for racing games and a vision for what we can do, the Criterion team will take Need for Speed into the next generation."
“Ghost Games have helped deliver some great Need for Speed experiences to our players. If we consistently deliver this at the AAA level, we need teams with different skills at locations where we can continuously support them and attract new team members to join. Efforts to set up an independent development group in Gothenburg over several years have shown that the breadth of talent we need for a full AAA studio is not available to us in the long term to create new Need for Speed experiences . "
It is currently unclear when the next Need for Speed will appear, but probably not until 2021.
