From the small to the big screen, we review everything that was audio-visual before Sonic The Movie from 1993 until now, in the middle of 2020.

The premiere of Sonic The Movie is already a fact. The blue hedgehog arrives on the big screen with a feature film produced by Paramount Pictures with real actors – except for Sonic. Six years have passed since the American giant took over the rights of the SEGA character, initially in the plans of Sony Pictures. Delays, problems and changes for a film that we can already see in cinemas, but what happened before?

Sonic's relationship with the public goes beyond video games. It all started with an animated series aired in 1993, which came in line with the first Mega Drive video game released in 1991. SEGA had a real commercial success, a pet capable of being extrapolated not only to stuffed animals and luminous posters, but to audiovisual entertainment sector.

Let's review today all those series and OVAS that have accompanied us in these more than twenty-five years.

The Sndication channel began broadcasting in 1993 this one-season production and a total of 65 episodes; One of the best known. It was based on the original creation of Yuji Naka and even reached our country through Telecinco, which was one of the companies associated in the production. Spain was, therefore, one of the main stakeholders in its original broadcast, along with Italy in Europe and Canada and the United States in the rest of the globe. Recognizable and with unforgettable moments, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog is the first great hedgehog series.

This time the name did not change much. This animated series, of which Telecinco also participated, arrived in Italy and the United States with Dick Sebast and Ron Myrick in the first and second seasons, respectively. A total of 26 episodes with a much more moderate success than the previous one. His script was essentially based on the comic of the time, with a more adult theme; although without neglecting its relevant comic reliefs. Its cancellation was not due to the loss of strength of its broadcast on television.

It was in 1996 when SEGA issued the first Sonic OVA, a total of two half-hour episodes (in the United States the two meetings were aired) as an animated film. The production was provided by Pierrot and was directed by Kazutaka Ikegami, including characters such as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Dr. Robotnik. This time there was no luck with his arrival in Spain, but they did have adaptation to VHS, now listed on sales portals. Where there was luck is in the United States, where ADV Films adapted the tape to DVD with subtitles in several languages, including Spanish.

Sonic Underground (1999)

For many, Sonic Underground is one of the most beloved productions of the hedgehog on the small screen, a total of 40 episodes with which some of those who read and read this grew in their day. A single season, but dozens of refills. This time, the protagonism resided not only in Sonic, but in his brothers Manic and Sonic. According to the story they told us, Queen Aleena had to escape the robotic forces of Dr. Robotnik and had to part with her children, the aforementioned. With separate paths, the three received a magic medallion that made them powerful musical instruments and weapons. From there, many adventures with greater or lesser success, but a name (and an intro!) Difficult to forget.

Sonic X (2003-2006)

Another series with which many grew up, this time with a style of animation and drawing much closer to the video games of the epic. It was precisely those production values ​​that allowed SEGA to fully succeed in assigning broadcasting rights to TV Tokyo, where TMS Entertainment and Hajime Kamegaki managed to keep the production live for three seasons and a total of 78 episodes. In Spain, its adaptation had a place on the Jetix channel, although later Boing, of Mediaset, also broadcast it on the free channel. Netflix is ​​now who provides these episodes, which of course featured dubbing in Spanish. Being the longest series so far, Sonic X could tell a much more worked story, with more characters and battles.

Sonic Boom (2014-2017)

Despite the bad reception among the criticism of Sonic Boom in video games, this sub-series within the official Sonic productions had a great acceptance especially in the United States. Two seasons and 104 episodes, this French-American production, produced by OuiDo! Producciones and SEGA of America, Inc. together with Lagardère Thématiques managed to monopolize a large share of the screen among the youngest. He also arrived in Spain through Clan TVE, from RTVE, in April 2016; and Netflix. Initially it was going to consist of 52 episodes, but its success allowed it to extend in time and even had adaptations to the comic by Archie Comics, which also took care of previous adaptations such as that of the aforementioned of the nineties.
