PS5: PS4 & Xbox One sales are falling dramatically

Playfront

Even if the PS5 and Xbox Series X are still a few months away, sales of the PS4 and Xbox One are already falling more drastically than initially thought.

This is clear from the NPD Group's recent numbers for the US market, which saw sales drop 35 percent in January from a year earlier. If you look at hardware, software and accessories, the decline is still 26 percent.

Even compared to the previous generation change, the current figures are much more dramatic. Back then, it was also the case that not so much was known about the PS4 as it is already the case with the PS5, which certainly also plays a role in this.

The analyst Daniel Ahmad comments:

“An interesting finding from the US NPD report is that PS4 and XB1 hardware sales in January 2020 will be significantly lower than PS3 and 360 sales in January 2013. Next generation consoles are upon us, but both fall off more than expected. ”

Only the Switch console from Nintendo is strong again in its sales and will not be influenced by the upcoming generation leap.

The rest of the year shouldn't be much easier for publishers and developers either. Not only are new consoles on the starting blocks, numerous large blockbusters have also been pushed far back, which are believed to also appear for the PS5 & Co. Against this background, it seems only logical that one reacts hesitantly with the purchase.
