PSVR 2 – Series production of a new display started at JDI

There is increasing evidence that Sony is actively working on a new PlayStation VR headset that is expected to come on the market sometime after the PS5. In the room there is a genuine successor with new technologies, but also a significantly optimized version of the current headset, which will be more tailored to the PS5.

The fact that one could soon hear and see something about the new headset is indicated by the current start of series production of a new display at Japan Display Inc. (JDI), in which Sony holds a few shares.

It is an LC display with a size of 2.1 inches, which works with a resolution of 1,600 x 1,600 pixels, a frame rate of 120 fps and a pixel density of 1058 ppi. All in all two, because two of these displays are used per headset. It is also worth mentioning that the display was specially designed for VR headsets.

For comparison: the current PlayStation VR headset uses a single 5.7 inch OLED screen with 1080p resolution and 386ppi, and the Oculus Rift S also a single LC display with a resolution of 1,280 by 1,440 pixels per eye, as well as 538 ppi. The new Valve Index, on the other hand, uses two LC displays, each with 1,440 by 1,600 pixels per eye. The display mentioned above is therefore a significant increase again.

A special silicone (LTPS) is also used here in order to achieve a higher pixel density, use less electricity, generate less heat and be able to reproduce rich colors. According to the JDI, this type of display was developed for particularly narrow and light VR headsets. The same technology is also used in the Lynx R-1 headset and is now being requested by other major manufacturers. Sony is considered very likely to do so if they push ahead with their VR plans.

However, a new PlayStation VR headset from Sony has not yet been officially announced.
