The location manager confirms the changes and explains the reasons that led to that decision.

Persona 5 Royal will change two scenes considered problematic in the West. During a preview session of the video game, GameSpot has had the opportunity to chat with Yu Namba, who has played an important role in the western location of the title. As confirmed, several homophobic dialogues have been modified in this new version of the Atlus title. Even so, the original Japanese version has remained intact.

In Persona 5 there are two gay characters that harass Ryuji in a couple of scenes. However, these characters are portrayed as "predators," says Namba. "I think the community had a very strong response to this," so they took note and decided to "definitely change it in Royal," he explains.

"As location manager, I can't do much with what is already in the game," Namba acknowledges when GameSpot asks about his freedom to modify production elements. “Team members felt weird when they were working on it. And with Royal, we were convinced to explore the possibility of doing something about it. ”

Difficulties and changes

It was not a simple task. “It was a great effort to consult with the production department, talk to the marketing team and ask them how they would feel if they decided to change things that were in Persona 5, what would be the reception of the public, what the company would think and if it would be fine make the change ”.

The journalist has specifically asked about the new dialogues, since those sequences were not included in the preview phase. “It's not a significant change, but I think there is enough change so that people who were not comfortable with that part of Persona 5 feel better this time. In Royal, these characters are "very enthusiastic about the things they like to do," but it's not as if they wanted to "hunt young boys."

Persona 5 Royal will be available exclusively for PS4 on March 31. It will be the first title of the saga that comes translated into Spanish. On the other hand, at Atlus they are aware that some Nintendo Switch players are asking for a port for their console. Although they have not officially confirmed anything, they have assured that there is no need to "never abandon hope."
