PS5 and Xbox Series X: Square Enix will opt for intergenerational games for now

The Japanese company, which will launch Final Fantasy VII Remake in April, says it will take time to publish exclusive games for the new systems.

The arrival of a new generation does not mean that the previous one is abandoned to its fate. Many of the first projects usually appear on both the new and previous platforms, a model that Square Enix intends to follow closely. This was confirmed by Yosuke Matsuda, president of the company, during a question and answer session held at the beginning of February. The manager, who spoke at the shareholders meeting, said that the next projects will be on PS5 and Xbox Series X, but also on the current generation consoles.

"The next generation of consoles will have backward compatibility, so we plan to release our new titles for the current and new generation of consoles," Matsuda said. "Therefore, it will be a little later when we release exclusive games for the next generation of consoles." There has been no talk about specific titles, although it is already known that the second installment of Final Fantasy VII Remake, Dragon Quest XII and a new Kingdom Hearts are in preparation, not to mention the new Luminous Productions, the studio behind Final Fantasy XV.

The immediate future

Square Enix works on the launch of one of the company's most ambitious video games, the long-awaited Final Fantasy VII Remake, which will be released on PlayStation 4, despite the exclusivity being temporary. The new version of the reimagined classic will be launched episodically, although Square Enix has not detailed how the model will be or how many deliveries will be composed. The only certainty is that each one of those chapters will have a complete game entity, or at least they assure from Square Enix.

Final Fantasy VII Remake was scheduled for March 3, but the company decided to delay the date by a month with a view to improving the state of the product as much as possible. The work will finally be commercialized on April 10, shortly after Resident Evil 3 Remake makes an appearance.
