Final Fantasy VII Remake: how Migdar has been rebuilt; atmospheric lighting

Square Enix points out that Midgar's striking lighting has only been achieved thanks to the Epic Games graphics engine. They explain their peculiarities.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will arrive this April exclusively for PS4 with a redesigned Midgar from top to bottom, while keeping intact the essence that all PlayStation users knew there by 1997. In this first part, only that act will be addressed, that of Midgar, whose reconstruction and lighting are based on the tools provided by the Epic Games Unreal Engine. Square Enix has explained how this reconstruction process has been carried out.

An expanded and familiar Midgar at the same time: the importance of light

This Midgar will be much larger, varied and deeper than the original; a city influenced by steampunk on the verge of devastation, but that in these first moments will allow you to see both its streets and skyscrapers, the day-to-day life of a population ravaged to see that aware of the socio-political conflicts of the moment. References to Advent Children are a reality: “Yes, we refer to Advent Children and other previous series works by rebuilding Midgar,” explains co-director Naoki Hamaguchi.

Hamaguchi details the new atmospheric lighting system: "We have used a new technology to improve the lighting of the game and make Midgar as realistic as possible," he says, aware of the power that engine can have. “A network of more than 100 synchronized computers make numerous physical simulations and calculations to know the exact reflections and how the light rays bounce on any object in the game. By doing this we have managed to create fantastic atmospheric lighting for the city. ”

From light to size: what Midgar would have been like in the real world

“One of the main things that we set out to remake was the scale of the same city. The original was not so realistic if you consider the size of each building and how large they were compared to the city in general. It wasn't very accurate, so we set out to make Midgar realistic. The size of the buildings, the density… that is one of the most important things we set out to change, ”he says.

Regarding the strictly logistic: “We have not done everything with the same quality or the same level of detail as the areas that you can visit in the game, but we have made a map of the whole city and what will go in each one of those areas. " He also points out: "We have put all that on the map and we understand enough details about the realities of how Midgar would have been built if it were a real city."
