PlatinumGames Announces New Graphics Engine for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC

The studio works on Bayonetta 3, Babylon's Fall and Project G.G., plus a fourth project that has yet to be officially announced.

The future of PlatinumGames looks bright. The developer has received a capital injection from Tencent and works on several different projects. His goal of independently publishing his games has yet to be fully accomplished, but he has major projects underway, such as Babylon's Fall and Bayonetta 3. Project G.G. yes it will be a game edited by them. With their sights set on the future, the Japanese have confirmed a new graphics engine that will serve for next-generation video games on PS5, Xbox Series X and PC.

What they have not indicated is whether any of the productions that are already announced will use this new tool or not. “Our research and development group finds the technical solutions we need to create exciting action games for the new generation. Now they are working hard on the PlatinumEngine, a new internally created graphics engine that will be used by all of our creations. ” The company points out, however, that they have not yet decided on the final name, so PlatinumEngine is just a code name. "It may differ."

Wataru Ohmori, from the studio, says the following: "We have used our own engine, specialized in action game development since PlatinumGames was founded." All in all, "Modern games need a new level of quality, a wide variety of objects on the screen and greater visual expressiveness." They came to the "terrible conclusion" that if they couldn't get the job done more efficiently, they wouldn't be able to "create the games" they wanted to design. "Our engine will help us produce games that are bigger and more expressive than ever."

They explored external alternatives

PlatinumGames admits they tested with commercial engines like Unreal Engine 4 or Unity, but realized they needed specific tools. "It is possible that those features were added at some point, but still, it would be at a time that we cannot control." According to Ohmori, if you develop original games, "lack of control can be fatal." So they decided that developing and improving their own engine would be "the only way" to make sure things were working properly.

The objective they set is to put aside "all unnecessary work", that is, to make the process more efficient. "Things like reducing the number of keystrokes needed to convert data" or "making the levels playable directly from the editor."

Neither Bayonetta 3 nor Babylon's Fall has a confirmed release date. The latter, produced by Square Enix, will receive new information in the summer. On the other hand, the remastering of The Wonderful 101 will go on sale on May 19 on Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PC.
