Gabe Newell: Artifact's failure "was a surprise"; big reboot on the way

Gabe Newell assures that Artifact's failure was "a complete surprise" for the team. They work in a full reboot on a large scale; it's called Artifact 2.

Valve did not hit the mark with Artifact. His first attempt at the Card Battle genre was far from his most recent successes. DOTA 2 and Counter Strike: Global Offensive remain big names on the global competitive scene. However, the first mentioned did not stop.

In an interview with EDGE magazine, Gabe Newell states that Artifact's failure was "a surprise" for his team. "We thought it was a pretty solid product," he says. "We conducted an experiment, with negative results, and now we must see if we have learned anything from it, so we will try again."

Newell shows confidence with this second chance. Far from standing idly by, the team behind Artifact is developing a new version, a reboot that will put the game in its rightful place: “What went wrong? How did we get here "Let's fix it and give it a new chance."

As stated in the magazine, internally this new version of the game is called "Artifact 2", although it is currently unknown whether this work will materialize in a sequel, an update for all its users or something completely new. Gabe adds that this work requires "a great restart to be able to justify its existence to its consumers and markets."

"It is a risky proposition"

With those words the conclusions of our Reviews began. With a rating of 8 out of 10, our partner Miguel Solo pointed to the risk that Artifact posed. “It is a game of long and dense sessions not suitable for the player in a hurry, but full of events, unique situations, and loads of opportunities for strategic play. Valve has created a world in which it is a pleasure to stay. A refined and complex title, with form and substance ”.

Although not everything shone, and is that its "strict monetization system" was impossible to ignore. You can read the full Reviews through this link.
