PS5: The SSD will reduce game sizes in the future

The PS5's custom SSD is still one of the core features of the new console, from which developers have great hopes. Apart from the speed, the player should also benefit from this by clearing up the SSD a little with large files.

The SSD built into the PS5 ultimately provides 825 gigabytes of storage space, which at first glance does not appear to be very much with today's game downloads. There is a new approach here, in which duplicate content in particular is simply sorted out. This is evident from the presentation by lead architect Mark Cerny last week.

Duplicate assets are unnecessary

With today's PS4 games, it is the case that many assets are double and triple in order to be able to access them faster. However, since the topic of speed no longer plays such a major role with the SSD, the content no longer has to be replicated, which ultimately means less storage space. Some time ago, Marvel’s Spider-Man from Insomniac Games was named as an example, which alone has around 10 gigabytes of double content. They would then simply be saved. Ultimately, games on the PS5 could generally be a bit smaller than now.

In addition to all these theoretical approaches, it remains exciting to see how the new consoles will perform in practice later and whether the differences in performance will actually be as noticeable as they are on paper.
