PS5 backward compatibility is "disappointing", says developer

Ozan Drøsdal, developer at Perfectly Paranormal, has an opinion on the way the Sony console will have to apply the previous compatibility.

Once the final specifications of both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are known, the video game industry is openly commenting on its first feelings, since it is the hardware that will accompany us for at least five years. In the case of PS5, SSD memory has amazed the thinking heads of the sector, but the backward compatibility creates a lot of uncertainty. Ozan Drøsdal, developer at Perfectly Paranormal, has voiced his limitations.

"It's kind of disappointing to hear that we still can't use our PS2 game collections without dusting off our old PS2," he begins by saying. According to the information published by Sony itself, PS5 will be compatible with "the 100 most popular games" of the fourth domestic generation at first; but more will be added in the future until there are practically the 4000 video games that make up this huge catalog.

"It is exciting to hear that we can play the original Xbox games on Xbox Series X. But it is also true that my choice of which console to choose will be governed by current-generation games," he adds. Microsoft plans to make Xbox Series X compatible from day one with all Xbox One games and all currently backwards compatible Xbox and Xbox 360 games; thus, on launch day there will be —at least— more than 600 backwards compatible titles.
