10 PlayStation 4 games that deserve to have a sequel on PS5

With a PS5 in sight at Christmas 2020, we leave our wishes for those titles that we want to see back on the Sony platform.

As with each end of generation, it is time to look back and remember which experiences have left the most imprint on our memory on each console. PlayStation has closed a dream cycle with PS4, a console that has convinced more than 108 million players and that, in these seven years, has left us with titles that we hope have not said their last word.

Talking about sequels is always a delicate thing. It doesn't always take a sequel to continue something that closed as it should; Although, in other cases, open endings or rectifiable defects invite us to think of a continuation that not only corrects, but improves what we have seen. In this article, we are going to talk about the exclusive PlayStation 4 video games that we want to see a sequel to on that PS5 that, little by little, is looming on the horizon.

It will not be until Christmas when PlayStation 5 reaches the market, a machine that we already know its final technical specifications, but not its games. Here is our wish list for future continuity on Sony's fifth home console.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

Guerrilla Games had always been one notch below other Sony internal studios. Younger than others, those from Amsterdam had operated from Europe looking askance at what their American and Japanese neighbors were doing with a Killzone that, although it managed to consolidate itself with numerous deliveries, did not achieve the excellence of Horizon: Zero Dawn, Aloy's work which is de facto one of the most successful new intellectual properties of this generation.

Horizon: Zero Dawn Horizon: Zero Dawn

Horizon has become a PlayStation icon with a single installment and it seems complicated to think that we will not see it more mature, capable and just as willing than in the first part, where it all started. It was a video game where a universe was presented, a very particular gameplay where there was room for action, stealth and a truly enriched lore. It is time to go further. Sony says it will make more "exclusive quality" single player games focused on the narrative, one of them should be this one.

Guerrilla Games is currently looking for creatives with multiplayer experience, an unprecedented component in the first Horizon, so at the moment it would be mere speculation to anticipate that a hypothetical Horizon: Zero Dawn 2, also not confirmed, may include multiplayer options. If a sequel manages to maintain the RPG components without giving up the action, improves the combat system and the enemy AI is more polished, we can be in the presence of a round video game.

God of war

There was a time when it seemed that God of War had said his last word. God of War: Ascension made it clear that attrition was a fact, it had to be stopped. PlayStation 2 will always be remembered for how Sony Santa Monica managed to make hack and slash something unique and excellent in its vision; while on PS3 we had the culmination of an immaculate trilogy. Such was the impact of the third installment on its day that we asked ourselves: what now?

God of war God of war

Time is sometimes the best medicine. Cory Barlog's team changed a lot along the way, including himself, that during the development of this new installment – we recommend watching this documentary to understand all the difficulties they encountered along the way – he was a father. Because it's all different in God of War for PS4, except that Kratos still felt somehow. He did not change.

Many years after the events narrated in the third part, the title became known as a diametrical change in the playable, the surprisingly narrative and in the design of the scenes, camera included. Impeccable is the word to define a game that, let's not fool ourselves, left the doors wide open for a future second installment. Santa Monica is already working on his next video game and, except for surprise, the protagonist will be Kratos again. Until then, it remains only to wait and replay the original game on PS5 if it is finally in the top 100 backward compatible games on the machine.

Marvel’s Spider-Man

At FreeGameTips we are huge fans of Spider-Man. When Marvel's Spider-Man was introduced in late summer 2018, this outlet was able to chat with Bryan Intihar, creative director of the video game, and made one thing clear to us: the team was made up of comic book readers, passionate about Peter's adventures Parker in both the Amazing and Ultimate universe of Bendis. And it showed, it showed a lot.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Marvel’s Spider-Man

If there is something that can be highlighted about Marvel's Spider-Man it is its ability to make us feel Spider-Man: rocking around the city, agility in the movement of the character, recreation of enemies, situations, personality of the protagonist … If to that we add all the details and winks to the story of the Lee comic, the result was a delight; although with room for improvement.

The title, close to the outstanding one, we really liked, but its end was not wavering and was clearly open. It is not necessary to go into plot guts to understand that sooner or later there will be a Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, it only remains to know when and on what platform. There are many rumors circulating out there, but the only official certainty that we can hold onto is that Sony Inteactive Entertainment bought Insomniac Games so that the studio became a first party team from the PlayStation label and, also, we know that they are already working in its next video game after Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4, which exceeds 13.2 million units sold worldwide. When we hear that "sell consoles" on PS5 we could not think of a better name.

Bloodborne

It just turned five years ago and remains one of FromSoftware's brightest works. The Japanese studio where Hidetaka Miyazaki has sealed his name for the history of the medium has managed not to compromise the quality of his productions despite releasing games with a periodicity that does not reach two years between deliveries. Bloodborne is exclusive to PlayStation and, now that it seems that Dark Souls is going to be silent for a while, added to the arrival of a new console, repeating the move from PS4 to PS5 can work wonders.

Bloodborne Bloodborne

The combat system marveled for being so agile and comfortable, so similar as well as so different from Dark Souls while still feeling soulslike. Lots of personality and idiosyncrasy in a title marked by its challenging design, the Yharnam universe, the soundtrack or the great differentiation of weapons. Furthermore, the approach does not prevent a second installment that, more or less continuous, can be equally valid based on what was seen in this first part.

What do we ask of an eventual Bloodborne 2? First, don't forget to be Bloodborne; aside from that, that all the final bosses are memorable, that the technical capabilities of the PlayStation 5 are used to reduce loading times or design even more detailed and rich worlds, or that the general performance is not compromised in the most demanding moments. onscreen. If it is achieved, we can add little more. We are not in a hurry, it will arrive when it has to, but it will arrive.

Ratchet & Clank

Before Insomniac Games ended up emerging commercially with the highly successful Marvel’s Spider-Man, the Californian studio signed what is so far its longest running saga: Ratchet & Clank. It was a time when the genre of three-dimensional platforms shone brightest, in the early 2000s; especially with the arrival of 128-bit consoles. If Naughty Dog had Jak & Daxter, Insomniac had the Lombax and the robot.

The first trilogy left unforgettable moments for PlayStation 2 players; as did the main PS3 trilogy — although there are more derivative installments — especially with Armed to the Teeth. But the delivery of PS4 left us amazed by its interpretation of the concept of remake: a reimagining from top to bottom, a film production that, without going any further, was accompanied by its film debut.

Ratchet & Clank Ratchet & Clank

The game continues to look great and reminded major publishers in the industry that the power of today's hardware can also be harnessed to design animated worlds, like those of yesteryear and now it seems only to want to cultivate with that mime the mustached plumber of Nintendo. Ratchet & Clank is a recreation of the first installment that beats the original video game, so we are surprised that it is waiting so long to do the same with the rest of the deliveries or, what is better, a totally new one. There are intangibles along the way, like if sales met expectations or if Insomniac Games is too busy with the wall-climber; but it wouldn't be too bad if PS5 has (even in its debut) back the young hero of the planet Fastoon.

Astro Bot: Rescue Mission

Astro Bot: Rescue Mission is one of the jewels of this generation, one of those hidden within the big publishers. It arrived at the end of 2018, surely overshadowed by the names that monopolized all the spotlight on those unforgettable Christmases, but if someone was hesitating to get a PlayStation VR or not, this work by SCE Japan Studio dissipated the choice.

Astro Bot: Rescue Mission Astro Bot: Rescue Mission

Because this platform game is designed by and to be played in virtual reality, with a level design that well revealed the possibility of being a kind of omniscient narrator, a third-person participant capable of controlling these cute robots in levels most imaginative. There is not a single world without playable news, without leaving us open-mouthed. The funny thing is that it is not only one of the best PS VR games to date, but it is also one of the best platform titles of the generation; a waste of talent, imagination and creativity where the surprise does not end.

A sequel on PS5 capable of continuing to take advantage of virtual reality or, why not, a delivery that does not necessarily require the peripheral – although part of the magic of VR is sacrificed for how well it is used in the design of 360 scenarios degrees—, we are sure that in that study they would be able to do something great. We have no doubts: we want them back.

The Order: 1886

For many this theme is "the melon shot" of PlayStation this generation. A title capable of being loved and hated at the same time, a video game that had very high and very low marks, but that due to this disparity of opinions invites us with more reason to desire a sequel capable of redeeming itself and showing that those who follow it defending they are not wrong.

The Order: 1886 is very particular, very cinematic and not too replayable. It was the first major PS4 exclusive, it set the bar very high because Ready at Down wanted to start demonstrating the true graphics power of the console. That is undeniable: it looked and continues to be seen as a scandal. An action adventure with black bands up and down, that did not invent anything that we had not seen previously, although it did not fool anyone either. Its approximately seven hours of duration felt like a long movie: shots, rhythm, type of scenes, background music …

The Order: 1886 The Order: 1886

But what went wrong in this steampunk universe? We could talk about it for hours; maybe the QTE; a script with somewhat hasty parts; the stealth sections that so little convinced or the secondary characters, of little charisma. But its soundtrack, the shootings and the setting left us wanting more. Whether there will be more or the work will be left to oblivion is something we still do not know, so we have to keep waiting: Ready at Dawn has not published any video games since then, in that long-ago year 2015.

Gran Turismo Sport

That Gran Turismo Sport was put on sale in a hasty and erroneous way is something that we are not going to discover now; but that it is also one of the titles that has managed to improve the most throughout the generation is something that we can not doubt either. We have closely watched the growth and transformation of the latest iteration of the Kazunori Yamauchi saga from its launch in late 2017 to now; and the change is abysmal.

If the title, as it is currently, had been released today, it would be worthy to be named Gran Turismo 7 and follow the numbered scale. The problem is that it arrived with hardly any single player content, without the cards (which is what defines the IP…) and with a permanent online mode. But things have changed. Monthly updates with new cars, layouts and news were continuous. We are talking about circuits like Spa-Francorchamps or Laguna Seca; the incorporation of rain or the realization of Porsche in the Gran Turismo universe, a dream years ago.

Gran Turismo Sport Gran Turismo Sport

As we discussed recently in this article titled “The Importance of Gran Turismo in the Future of PlayStation 5”, the PlayStation community needs a strong Polyphony Digital, like the one that amazed PSX and PS2 players with GT2 and Gran Turismo 4, respectively ; the climax of his generation in the genre, almost without hesitation.

We have no doubt that Sony is working with Gran Turismo because they have said it themselves: GT Planet also spoke with Yamauchi this February and commented on what he wanted for the future; Back in October, the saga was also discussed as an example to expose the benefits of the new PS5 controller, which will incorporate adaptive triggers to feel differences, for example, between driving on asphalt or on the sand. And yes: Polyphony has been working on the new installment since 2019. So, please, we want Gran Turismo back showing its best face on PS5.

DriveClub

We still remember 2013, the year of the race for the beginning of what was then “the new generation”. With PS4 on the horizon, Sony put all the meat on the grill to use DriveClub as one of the great exponents of the console's launch catalog and with that free version of PS Plus with which it wanted to incentivize the profit of the faithful in the membership service. This is not the time to talk about his delays and problems, but to stay with the best face of what is, now, one of the greats of the realistic arcade simulation of the generation, surely only behind Forza Horizon in that regard.

Because what was initially a very improvable product in 2014 (content, online, AI problems, lack of adjustments …), but Evolution Studios was improving it until leaving it infinitely better than when it came out: new cars, the impressive rain or that Graphic section that, due to the way the game was designed, remains a visual delight in interpreting colors, lighting or realism. Not to mention the sensations behind the wheel, a true arcade driving simulator.

DriveClub DriveClub

The sad closure of the study prevents us from glimpsing a second part with so much security, although Sony still owns the IP, so everything is possible. Hopefully the checkered flag for DriveClub hasn't been crossed yet.

Tearaway Unfolded

And we end with MediaMolecule, because apart from LittleBigPlanet and the new Dreams, the British studio released Tearaway in between on PS Vita to later adapt it to PS4. And boy did we like the game. We were afraid that moving away from the Sony portable console (with its touch capabilities and rear panel) could be a reversal in the enjoyment of the adventure, but the transfer of the control scheme managed to take advantage of the DualShock 4 like few others until now. . In addition, the big screen made him wonder for the chosen artistic section, the quality for the detail or the lighting. He felt fresh, very innovative in his proposal within the genre of three-dimensional platforms.

It did leave us with the feeling that something more could be achieved, that the adventure could offer even more surprises, puzzles, challenges and some not so marked peaks of difficulty. Dreams is proof that MediaMolecule still had aces up its sleeve, so why not again on PlayStation 5? Now that we know that the PS5 controller will have new features such as haptic technology, what better way to highlight those characteristics than with a Tearaway title, which would then become what many are waiting for, a saga.
