Ed Boon tells us what his favorite Fatality is

Mortal Kombat co-creator gave us a chance to interview him remotely

Amid the conjuncture due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many characters have opened their doors at least digitally, such is the case of Ed Boon, the legendary co-creator of Mortal Kombat and currently creative director of NetherRealm Studios. In this distance talk, we seek to explore a little about your tastes and especially part of your journey in the development of Mortal Kombat 11. We present this interview below.

FreeGameTips: How was programming and designing the Spawn character compared to other Mortal Kombat characters?

EB: In fact, Spawn's design (as a fighter) was not a far cry from what we do in Mortal Kombat. As I have mentioned on other occasions, Spawn is perfect for the style and tone of the Mortal Kombat universe. He has these amazing chains that remind me of Scorpion's. Her iconic flowing cape was a huge challenge for us because we wanted to visually represent her as she deserved. Spawn has been featured in quite a few ways over the years, from comics to animated shows to a movie. We studied them all as part of how we wanted to represent you in Mortal Kombat 11. It was a fun process for all of our design, animation, technology and cinematics teams. Everyone had a lot of fun.

FreeGameTips: What is your favorite Mortal Kombat Fatality?

EB: It is a difficult question since we have had tanos. From a nostalgic point of view, I'd say Sub-Zero's original Fatality; in the first game when your spine is ripped off. But from an execution point of view, I would say the one from Scorpion where he sliced you in Mortal Kombat X or when he pierced your mouth with his spear in Mortal Kombat 11.

FreeGameTips: What is your favorite Mortal Komat character and why?

EB: My favorite character in any Mortal Kombat has always been Scorpion. He is and always will be my favorite.

FreeGameTips: What series or movies do you recommend in these times?

EB: I think the last Joker movie was great. Although it has some disturbing scenes, the movie overall is very powerful. There are many shows that I would like to see (streaming) now that we are spending more time at home.

We thank Ed Boon, NetherRealm Studios and WB Games for making this interview possible.
