Infinity Ward highlights role of story in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone

The company plans to follow in the wake of Epic Games when it comes to Fortnite events, though it has not confirmed exactly how they will approach it.

One of the most criticized aspects of Call of Duty: Warzone, Infinity Ward's battle royale, is the replacement of some temporary game modes, something that the studio has consciously decided. However, the developers are exploring the possibility of working on story content for Warzone. In an interview with Gamesbeat, the narrative director of the video game, Taylor Kurosaki, explained how they are facing evolution in that field beyond the campaign. According to the writer, the Modern Warfare story never ended with the end of the campaign, as new Special Operations events were added.

"We didn't want it to feel like three different games in one box. We wanted it to be a massive world with a fiction and a universal narrative, "he explains. "To players who love history, we wanted to offer more stories while playing Warzone, when they enjoy multiplayer, or when they play Special Operations."

The narrative component

According to Kurosaki, if you look back and watch the first season as a movie, "this tells a bit of the story": As for the second season, the one that reintroduces the Ghost character, this also offers another part. of history. The narrative director confirms that with the premiere of Season 3, they will continue to delve into that aspect, hand in hand with Alex.

"The important thing for Alex is the moment he made the decision to fight for something he believed in." He took that path not because he was ordered to, knowing that this was a crucial mission for him. On the narrative side, what is remarkable is that it was the character who was willing to sacrifice himself. On the other hand, during the interview they asked him if the changes in Warzone would go in the direction of the Fortnite events: "That is exactly the kind of thing we are working on," he confesses. "Again, all this will fit" throughout the planning for Modern Warfare, which has continued in its battle royale.
